If you want to kill elk to 1000 and practice alot plus want good barrel life you narrow it down pretty darn fast. For a 30 cal go 300 win. Great brass available, superb accuracy, and a long range bullet selection that is awesome. If you think you are going to have the majority of your shots on elk at 1000 or past, then go 338, the 338 EDGE, Lapua or RUM. I beg to differ on the 338 LM not being practical. The LM brass will be going strong after you have tossed away 3 times as many cases in other 338's. That is if you load them close to 2800 fps like the LM will do. And you did say you were going to shoot a lot so now the LM brass is the lowest in cost. The custom action will cost you a little more. But take a $400 Rem 700 doner and have it trued and a few other mods ( bolt release etc) and you have an action that is aproaching the cost of a custom, only you still have a 700 action. Not that they are not a good action, but I would go with a Stiller for under 1K if I was looking for a value in a custom action. Or if you can find a Weatherby rifle for a doner, or a used action, screw a 338 LM chambered barrel on it and go. No truing needed. Jeff. ps: I have 1000's of rounds through the 338 LM's and the 300 win's. Including many long range elk kills with both, no regrets here.
