What is the fastest cartridge?

Can't compare with the pee wee 17's, but in the 6mm category don't think there's much to run with my 243 Catbird. 4018 with a 66gn Knight. Perfect for converting p-dogs to a red cloud. :D

A guy I knew in Kansas from the Vietnam Era said they use to use their M60 Tanks to shoot at feral hogs on the gun range (Ft. Riley). At the time they were using rifled 105mm rounds. Said pigs vaporized upon impact.:D

Tank

I'll bet, especially with the HE rounds! Got to admit, there's a round that you don't have to worry about "expansion" on the terminal phase.

I do like the idea of the 120 APFDS round on P-dogs, though. There's quite an image on that one.

The 22/06-7X64 that Gerard of GS Custom Bullets built, claims 4700fps with his 40gr HV bullet.I am in the process of building a 22/06 with a 700 action 32" Pac-Nor barrel. It won't be finished till the spring I'll also have some of the GS Custom 40grs. by then and we'll see what this one does!........

Wildcat, factory or whatever. What is the fastest cartridge in the world? I know there are some velocities in the 4000's but how fast is the fastest? Bullet size does not matter, simply speed. Just curious, not interest in building one.

Lets keep it civilian rifle.

I think probably the .204 ruger is the fastest standard production round at 4,400-4,450 with the 32gr.

We once pushed some .220 swift 50gr to 4,400 as well but not with good results.

I got close to 4100, if memory serves me, with 150gr ballistic tips in my .30-.378IMP. with 30" barrel. I guess I should have tried 125gr bullets. 165gr ballistic tips were in the 3900-3950 range I believe. It probably would have gone 4300+ with 125's.

I know that this is not the fastest cartridge but I have a .30-06 and have purchased two boxes of remington accelerator which claim to pop about 4085 fps. My brother also has a .220 swift that I believe to be one of the fastest conventional cartridges.

That was a long drawn out post, since it was narrowed down to factory chambering, load some 55grn NBTs in a mark V weatherby in 240 wby mag, basically a 22-06AI, not positive but should top 4500fps since a 243 will get close too 4100 in a 24" barrel with the same bullet, and the 240 wby has an easy 400+fps advantage over the 243.

The 7X64 or 22/06 is clearly faster at 4700 compaired to the Milsteads 43 and change with a 40gr. pill..............

Milstead with a Berger 30 gr. HP MEF with 50 grains of Rel 15 = 5,278 fps .554" group at 100 yds.

Anyone got one faster? :D

5278?!?!?!?! snap thats fast! Now, is there a round that'll get something in the 300 grain bullet wieght going 5200fps around?:D
