My hunting is mostly for deer on public land. The hunters are usually in the same old spots, glassing from high points and running the ridge lines looking for bucks. I've found a lot of bucks by getting just a bit off the trails and looking into areas that can't be seen from those high points. Spend time scouting. That is obvious, but few hunters actually do it. Be patient and learn to glass. I've read some good articles on glassing but the best way to get good is to practice. This year on my deer hunt I saw 9 bucks opening morning. A hunter up the canyon from me shot at a deer, and I later asked him which of the bucks he had shot at. He said it was a little 2 point and it was the only buck he had seen. Another word about patience: Being prepared will help immensely. Take along things that will make you comfortable, such as something to sit on, snacks, a book, a journal. You're more likely to stay out in the field if you're enjoying it.
