Weatherby and the No.1

    A little help. I’m loading for a .270 Weatherby in a Ruger No.1. Split a case neck to measure cartridge overall length with a bullet inserted and got 3.595 OAL to the tip of a 140 gr. Accubond with the action closed while a factory Weatherby 150gr. load measures 3.265 OAL. I need to know how much free bore to leave and maybe gain a little case capacity.

    The freebore is just about what you measured it to be = 0.325


    You can jam the bullets if you wish but you will have to start very low on the powder charge and work you way up to where you believe you are at max for that particular seating depth. When the primers fall out you are over max - that is the good thing about Norma brass- it will tell you when your pressures are too high.

    If I was you, I would approach things with the bullet seated out as far as possible and a very light load. Then I would slowly increase the load until I got to max. Then I would decrease the seating depth and increase the load incrementally one variable at a time looking for best velocity and accuracy.

    Thanks (BAMA) Bob, you da man! I scoured the internet looking for that info without luck. Any insight to how much free bore is actually needed for a happy medium? With all of those variables I could burn out the barrel searching for the right combo. One of the great advantages to the No.1 is no magazine length to limit me. Gotta love those No.1's. My 45/70 loaded to max with a HAWK 300 gr. HP is something to behold on game.

    My experience with a Ruger #1 and a standard freebore 7mm Wby was that the 160 Accubond did not mind jumping at all. The accubond has a long bearing surface that seems to keep it straight until it is engaged in the rifling. The accubond has a thick jacket and a hard alloy core so it may reach higher pressures before a similiar weight softer core bullet - some people dispute that but it is what I found.

    I would start with it seated with the boat tail junction located at the neck junction. As long as you can get good accuracy and good velocity then you have the best of both worlds
