Three rings for BIG guns?

I've noticed in several videos and pictures that many are using three sets of rings on the big 338's.
For the people that do, what happened in the past that made you want to use three rings?

Failure of the scope? Rings slipping? Other?

I am pretty sure that the third ring is to counter-act the effect on the scope when the rifle is pulled forward by the muzzle break. Kirby mentioned it in one of his posts, but I cannot remember which one.
