I don't see much on LRHF about this.
They use them to check your firearm bore to the suppressor bore.
so you don't have a baffle strike and blow up a $1300 dollar unit.
A lot of us going the suppressor route now, Don't need issues for sure.

It is tough to make a long, small diameter rod, straight. It is also tough to keep it that way.

Good machining practices by a competent gunsmith would probably eliminate the need for that kind of rod

I've bought a 22 cal and 308 cal rod in the past-- problem is they may be straight when machined but after shipping, I've had to return several times to get one I felt was straight enough. The material they are made from seems to be too soft and bends easily.

Surefire suppressors

Have all sold them in the past

McMaster sells tool steel rods that work well for a hell of a lot less than the rods sold specifically for checking alignment. Just make sure you order something with a straightness tolerance. I usually get W1 tool steel.

I have used the McMaster steel rods and they work well. If you put your suppressor on you can generally tell if it is aligned by looking down the barrel. If you can see any portion of the suppressor, you have a problem. I maintain over 30 AR's with cans at work. There are several companies that sell suppressor alignment tools.

Just found this on the McMaster rods. T.P.

These are O1 part numbers. McMaster's O1 does not have a straightness tolerance. You might get a straight rod, but you might not. If you get a slightly bent rod, which happens frequently, it's useless as an alignment rod. McMaster won't replace it as they offer no guarantee on straightness. Most of their W1 and A2 rods are speced at .005" per foot for straightness, which is adequate for checking alignment. If you receive one that's out of spec they'll replace it. These are the part numbers for common sizes of rods.
