If you want t to shoot out of a 308 length magazine I'd highly recommend the 6.5 x 47 Lapua. It's similar to a 260 Rem in performance but can use longer (lower drag) bullets in a 2.8" OAL package. It also uses the 308 bolt face so converting to it would just be a barrel swap. It gets a performance boost from a higher pressure rating than the 308 or 260 even though it has a little less case capacity. There's also the 6.5 Creedmoor which is sort of in between the 260 Rem and 6.5x47 but in my opinion the 6.5x47 has more to offer. Certainly the 264 WM is not suitable for a short action. It's the same length as a 30-06 or 7mm Rem Mag. Neither are any of the WSMs, SAUMs or the 6.5 Rem Mag , 248 Win, or 7mm-08 if you want to use heavy low drag bullets. The SAAMI OAL for the 6.5x284 is 3.228". It's not close to suitable for a 308 length action. Even the 308 needs a longer action to shoot heavy low drag bullets. The 308 can work with 155 grain Palma bullets at 2.8" OAL but the 6.5x 47 has less wind deflection and less drop at 1000 yards. The 243 or 243 AI would work but I don't see any advantage over the 6.5x47 except possibly reduced recoil and maybe better accuracy in low wind conditions. The 6.5 x47 will have reduced recoil compared to the 308. The case shape of the 6.5x47 is already similar to the\Ackley designs. Barrel life will be about like the 260 Rem. Worse than a 308 but better than a 6.5x284 or a 243 Win. One more advantage of the 6.5x47 is that factory Lapua brass is standard.
