OK, I have one of these (223) on order! I have done my research and it seems that the replacement stocks out there won't fit the new center feed short actions. The problem seems to be the way the magazine well is inletted. Can I use these aftermarket stocks if I only will be using the rifle as single shot? Also, can I modify it to allow for the center feed magazine to function?

Maybe I haven't done my research. It appears that the center feed design hasn't been applied to the 223 or 204. Here's what SSS has to say:

Savage Centerfire Action Length Identification. To help determine what action you have, here are the action screw center-to-center measurements. Long Action: 5.062" (all years)
    3rd Gen Short: 4.400" (2006 - present)
    2nd Gen. Short: 4.275" (1998 - 2005)
    1st Gen. Short: 4.522" (1959 - 1988)
    Striker:

    Additional Notes:
    - The 1st Generation Short-Actions are today commonly referred to as "J-Series". This is incorrect as a "Series" designation simply refers to a slight design change. Rifles marked "Series J" can be either a 1st Gen. short-action or a long-action.
    - The 2nd. Generation Short-Actions comprise most of what you will run across.
    - The 3rd Generation Short-Actions are the newest production models and can be easily identified as they will have the new center-feed magazine system. The only exception is rifles originally built in .223 Remington or .204 Ruger as Savage has yet to release a center-feed magazine for these smaller diameter cartridges.

I guess I will find out when I go pick it up.

call Sharp Shooter Supply, and ask for "Peaches." She'll ask you for the bolt hole spaceing on the action, and go from there

There are as many, if not more, stocks available for center feed actions as for stagger feed ones. SSS, Stockade, Russo, HS, McMillan, Hart, B&C, etc.... A lot of the off the shelf ones will be inlet for a heavy barrel though.

It's very easy to convert a stagger feed stock to centerfeed. At least mine was, I had a boyds laminate stock for my stevens 200 long action. I did some checking on how others have done this and all that was needed was some minor work on the rear action screw hole on the inside to accomodate the "tab" on the rear of the magazine. Then a spacer is required in the front of the magazine, most often a piece of wood. The whole conversion took me about 20 min, and everything worked properly. If you are interested, I could try to find pictures I took.

Long actions have the same action screw spacing both center and stagger feed. Short actions are different so you'll have to move the hole for the front action screw. Still not a big deal, in my opinion, but definately more involved. Stocky's has laminate sporter stocks for centerfeed short actions in-stock.

Thanks for clearing that up, I didn't know the short actions were different spacing. Anyway I did find one picture..You can see the wood spacer in the front. I did it quickly as a mock up, I would spend more time on the spacer if I were to keep it. I did not like the thumbhole stock for walking around with. [IMG]

I've got a Manners T2 stock orginally inletted for a Savage VLP short action

It's 4.40" screw spacing, will this fit the Stevens 200 Short action Centre-feed?

    Cheers

Yes. The Savage/Stevens are the same action.
