Rem 721 30-06 no serial number

my brother has bought a Rem 721 springfield 30-06 at a estate sale that has no serial number nor does it appear to of ever had one, has it is a sportster style stock, pertty beat up, open sights and has not been drilled for a scope. Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this gun.

The serial number is inside the action, on the left rail.

I have a 721 in 30-06 also. On my particular rifle, the serial number is on the left-hand side of the action, just back from where the barrel is screwed in. Maybe they were located differently in different years? mtmuley
