There have been some serious limitations imposed on this project. Not sure why. Just like the long action version of the Rem 700, the short action can be extensively modified to work with a wide range of chamberings. Its a simple matter to fit a Wyatts extended mag box to allow up to 3.000" OAL to be used as a repeater in the Rem 700 short action. This will allow any chambering based on the 284 or shorter cases. You may have to have a throat length set up for this magazine box length but its easy to do and really opens up the possibilities. Also, its a simple matter to open up the bolt face to accept a magnum short action case such as the great WSM chamberings and their wildcat brothers. These rounds can be a bit ****y feed wise on a receiver not set up for them originally but again, use a Wyatts center feed mag box and your feed problems go away. This opens up your options to very impressive 1000 yard chamberings. My personal favorite is the 6.5mm WSM. Shooting a 142 gr SMK or 140 gr Berger or Hornady A-Max at 3050-3100 fps is pretty hard to beat. Very low recoil as well. If you want a bit more barrel life, the 7mm WSM will offer great performance with the 168 and 180 gr VLD type bullets. Personally, if you were looking for the easiest conversion possible for this project, your overlooking an amazing little chambering that is nearly identical in performance with the 6x47. That is the 6mm-250. Could not be easier to load for, no fireforming needed, easy to get brass and cheap brass as well. With a bit of sorting and a little bench work, you can get a batch of 22-250 brass that is just as consistant as 6x47 brass and at half the cost. With a 1-8 twist barrel, you can get a 105 gr Berger VLD out of the muzzle at velocities from 2900 to nearly 3000 fps depending on barrel length. Its amazing what this little round will do at 1K. Just an option, this would only require a new barrel with no other mods needed to the receiver. I would still recommend an extended mag box possibly just for the long match bullets to be comfortably used.
