Old School Squirrels

A smokepole is a great way to hunt, but my only M/L is a 50 cal. in-line and I've seen what that does to a squirrel. 1/2 is perfect, 1/2 is missing.:D

Pistol is enough of a challenge for me.

I love this thread. Up here in north east Oklahoma people just dont hunt squirrels like they did
45 years ago. Back then most kids cut there hunting teeth on squirrels. But not now.

Morning, i live in tx. where there is no law on hunting tree rats. fox, grey and

black squirrels. we have

a tremendous amount of pecan orchards in this state. i have 2 trees in my

yard that r a century++ years old. in conjested areas we shoot rats with

shotguns. out in the country my fellow hunters use 22 magnums. tree rats

r very tenious to dislodge from a limb. the 22 remy 40gr. green tip is a rat

dislodger. head shot dislodges the rats from the limbs. very nice shooting rigs!!!

i noticed the rat showed in the picture is a black rat. my quesiton is r black

rats good to eat??

yes the rats r very good to eat. I soak in salt water to get the blood out of the

meat. soak them in milk over night. morning i dip them in egg, roll in seasoned

flower. put on napkins, when thru battering. the batter should b firm.

soybean oil to around 300-350deg. drop them in the hot oil, when they turn

golden brown. remove, brown gravy with onion salt, garlic, pepper. heat to

slow bubble and remove Serve with mash potatoes, corn and corn bread or

biscuts. finger licking good. Cook chicken fried back strap the same way.

grandmothers home cooking. Crisco and lard also work as cooking component.

Here in Iowa we fry them just like chicken and then make fry pan gravy.

Now I'm getting hungry!

Here we have mostly grays and fox squirrels. West and north of here ( SE Iowa ) there are some black squirrels I plan to chase someday.
