We only had a limited time to hunt this ranch so we decided that we would set up some drives through the heavy brush cover and hope to kick out a big buck.</p><p> </p><p>I must give BJ, Matt and Tyler a huge thanks for this, beating the brush in near 100 degree temps for nearly 3 hours was much more then they should have had to do but they did it with no complaints.</p><p> </p><p>On the last of three drives they started getting some real results. When we started the hunt, I had planned on setting up and shooting long range so I had my heavy 300 AX. Now that we were doing a drive hunt I did not have the right rifle but I would do my best to make it work. A 15 lb rifle just does not swing real well on a close, fast moving target!!!</p><p> </p><p>As they made their way through the last bit of brush, alot of animals started pouring out of the cover. Alot of whitetails, a couple herds of Blackbuck, mostly does with some nice bucks and one REALLY nice buck.</p><p> </p><p>Then came the Axis, mostly does at first, they some smaller bucks. Minutes later a couple larger bucks came out but nothing that was really a shooter. Then a large buck came out but he was in full velvet and only around 2/3 grown but he would be a nice buck.</p><p> </p><p>Things slowed down from then and we were just beginning to get ready to pack it in when we saw some legs running through the brush, they a bit of horn could be seen, a buck, a nice buck. Then nothing. Seconds later he broke through a clearing and I was on the rifle. Got settled in as he cleared the brush. He looked tall and wide with good mass and pretty good fronts.</p><p> </p><p>Shawn said to take him but I was already trying to get a line on him. He was coming hard quartering toward us. First shot, about 125 yards, miss. Watching the video must have zipped right by his nose as he pulled his nose up into the air at the shot. Second shot was closer, around 80 yards, found its mark but a bit back. Still the buck fell to the shot and I was able to finish the buck off with a final shot to the chest.</p><p> </p><p>It had all happened so fast it was hard to comprehend what had just happened. I was really wishing for my lightweight 7mm AM as I tried to swing with the buck but the old Raptor get things done.</p><p> </p><p>We got up to the buck and I was personally very happy with him. Shawn was disappointed as he had judged the buck to be much larger then he actually was. Still, he had +33" main beams, +12" fronts and nearly 8" bases. Would have preferred it be a long range shot but time constraints prevented that. Shawn had wanted me to get a world class buck which this buck is not. It is however a nice mature buck and I am sure it will not be my last and I could not be happier with him or Shawns guiding abilities.</p><p> </p><p>We got the buck caped as quickly as possible, boned out the meat and got everything packed in ice for the trip back to Oklahoma. It was hot as hell but that is to be expected this time of year. It was great to finally meet Steve and BJ and spend some time in the field with them. I can say they are exactly as I have come to know in my many dealings with them, two great guys that like to hunt and I am glad to call them my friends. We are already schemeing to get a hunt planned up here possibly chasing some speed goats!!!
