I've been putting together a rifle for an antelope hunt this fall in Wyoming. I decided to go with a 6.5-284 Norma so I bought a Savage M111 LRH. I put on a Nikon Monarch 4-16 for glass and worked up a Load with the Berger 140 gr. VLDs. After I settled on a load shooting 3057 fps, I ordered a custom turret from Nikon.
Took it hunting for the first time yesterday. About 3:30 pm I stopped to check a field for ground hogs. I saw a coyote come out of a brushy creek for a second, but it ducked back in. I got out the FoxPro FX3 and turned on the Coyote Pup Distress 2 sound and got ready. The coyote ran into the newly sprouted corn field at a dead run from 500 yards. The wind was directly from me to him. At 259 yards he stopped to look up at my location. The VLD hit him in the chest and he dropped.

After talking to the farmer, I set up on an alfalfa field where he'd been seeing some ground hogs. This big sow crawled out on a piece of lumber on a scrap lumber pile at the far edge of the field at 400 yards. With a 6 mph wind from the left, I dialed 1 MOA left wind and set the custom turret to 400 yards. The hog disappeared at the shot and I found her at the base of the wood pile.

Not bad for a first outing. I named the rifle Norma.
