My son just purchased a Remington 700 in 308, 16.5" heavy with 1 in 10 twist.

Since I just had both of my knees replaced I will not have any time to build up a good deer load for his rifle. We hunt in PA and his stand over looks a 300 yard plus view. He got a 9 point out of that stand a year ago which he dropped at over 150 yards using his 700 in 30-06.

He wants to shoot a 168 grain bullet out of his new 700. I am looking for suggestions for factory 168 grain ammunition that will perform well in his 16.5 inch barrel.

I suggested Winchester Silver Tips. Any other suggestions?

Any and All Suggestions will Greatly Be Appreciated!

Thank You,

Dane

I had the 700 Varmint in .308 that I had cut down to 24". I had more barrel length than you do obviously, but that rifle loved the 168gr ballistic silvertips. I shot and killed 2 caribou in Canada and 2 deer in NC all with 1 shot kills. Granted, it wasn't long range with the longest shot bewteen 150-200 but that ammo never failed me. Hopefully it will work as well in his gun.

RIFLE/SHOTGUN AMMUNITION - 7.62X51 - HORNADY LE .308 168GR BTHP TAP PRECISION #80975 - 20 ROUNDS

Dane, I've used these on deer before out of my old custom .308 with a 20" M24 barrel on it, and believe it or not, they worked awesome! Shot great even out to 1K.

That's the only place I find them for sale, other than my local LE distributor (which I buy from them), but if I were you, I'd buy a couple boxes and give them a shot.

If those don't work for you, I'd give these a try:

Nosler Trophy Grade Ammo 308 Winchester 165 Grain AccuBond Box of 20

Right now your factory ammo choice is what ever you can find in 308 win. Most any 150 to 168 gr HUNTING bullet will do for deer out to 300 and a bit yards. Zero the rifle 3" high at 100 yards and you should be between 3 and 4" low at 300 yards. You can hold center of front shoulder on a deer from point blank to 300 yards and not miss.
I have a 21 1/2" Heart barrel on a custom 700 and for deer I have found that the 125 gr Nosler ballistic tip with 46 grs IMR 4895 WW case CCI BR-2 primer will do 3000 fps and out to a touch over 300 yards kills deer like lightening struck them. Good luck and good shooting.

Thank You for all of the suggestions. I am posting some pictures of my son's 700 with his AAC SDN-6 suppressor that he will use to hunt White Tail with in PA.

The stock is going to be replaced. He needs to buy his scope soon.

Good lookin setup! I am a big fan of the AAC 762SDN-6 can. It's a very universal one for .17 to .308 caliber bullets. They build good quality stuff, too.

If I had the money, I would already have one, but other bills come first, so I will have to wait till a later day.

Unfortunately we can't hunt game animals with suppressors in Alabama, so I'm pretty sure we could still shoot squirrels, rabbits, hogs, and stuff like that with them.

I do hope to have one some day soon, but the prices are pretty high, plus the $200 tax stamp and tax means I'm up to about $1,200 for one. But I think that in the end it would be worth it.

Federal Gold Medal 165 Sierra Match Kings or Game Kings. Good brass, helluva round. My 308 eats them up when I'm not shooting handloads. Puts 'em in the same hole at 100 yards.........
