I am building a new rifle on a 700 LA with a Kreiger #5 barrel and a McMillan Rem Classic stock. I intend to mount a Leupold 6.5x20 50mm LR/T (30mm tube) or a NF 5.5x22 50mm. I want the scope mounted as low as possible and I am trying to figure out what ring/base combination will do it. I want to use a Picatiny rail base and am considering a 20 MOA base (I think a 10 MOA would be better for my purposes).

I want this scope mounted as low as possible because I am concerned about the comb of the stock being a bit low and McMillan doesn't install an adjustable cheekpiece on this stock.

Has anyone been through this exercise already?

It looks like the Burris Tactical low rings have a height to the centerline of the ring of .840" Does anyone make any lower rings?

I don't like the looks of the saddle cheek pieces. The stock was chosen do to my personal tastes. All of my hunting rifles use the same stock. However, they all have 40mm objective scopes so there is no problem mounting them low. If I had considered the issue more carefully, I may have opted for the HTG with integral cheek piece. THe die has now been cast and I am trying to mitigate the issue by using the lowest set-up that I can find. Thus far, .840' is the lowest I have found. I believe that I could use a ring as much as .100" lower based upon measurements of other rifles.

If I am still having an issue after finding the lowest usable ring/base combination, I will find a way to build up the cheek piece.

.84 & .82 isn't very much (two 100th. of an inch). I doubt I could see the difference if they were side by side.

I did similar set up stock and same scope. I put a Eagle rifle stock pack on w/padded check. Len posted a video in stock fit and a sniper trainer has same set up, he built up under with simple wood shim that just lifts off.Video was scope fitting

Are you building a functional rifle to hunt with, or a "model" for the cover a magazine? DE or Karsten cheek pieces work. I'm all about a sexy rifle, but suitability and function have to be there for my hard earned dollar.

If you knew me, you wouldn't ask that question. All of my rifles get used quite a bit, even my hunting rifles.

I have looked at both the DE and the Karsten cheek pieces. I am certain that they are very functional. I am equally certain that you will never find either one on a rifle that I own. They do not fit with my tastes and therefore wouldn't get my hard earned dollar. If I can't work out a satisfactory solution using low mounts and perhaps an ad-on pad, I will have the rifle restocked and use this stock in another application.

Here is link of some very nice rings, they also carry the base. The rings are a tad taller than the other one you stated but the base has a really low profile, might end up lower overall.

Thanks. I am going to look into the Farrell base with one of the other lower rings.
