I've shot regular accubond hunting bullets for years and they have yet to let me down. In both my 300 Rum and 300w's, the Sirocco's have performed extremely well for me as well. I have less experience with the Sirocco's but even on large boars I've had clean one shot kills at over 800yds and when you get up over 500lbs the boars are as tough to shoot clean through as any game in N. America. They have a thick cartilage shield under the skin that runs from behind the shoulders up under and around the neck on both sides that can be 3-5" thick not to mention a lot of tough bone.

500, keep in mind that the spine of a moose is pretty massive. This was a mature (though younger) bull.

My hunting partner recovered the bullet that went through the heart. It's sitting on my desk at work. Will post a pic later, but there was pretty much zero expansion. Looks like the bullet stayed pristine until it hit the far side rib. The nose is partially collapsed and bent to one side. Looks like it needs some bone to expand at 1800 ish fps. Hmmm, may switch to the hunting VLDs... Have to think about this.

I've had guys bring up the point of checking the tip for obstructions. I go threw every bullet before I load it with a needle to make sure There is nothing blocking the opening.

The bullets that do have obstructions I use for target shooting.

Montana, I'm getting about 2875 fps when the outdoor temp is around 55 deg with a 26 in barrel and H4831 SC. Get about 2810 when it's about 0 ambient. How does that compare to Retumbo and H1000?

Broz uses H1000 in his 28" 300 WM and is getting about 3050 fps with the 215's which is about a 50 fps increase in velocity over the 210 VLD's. The 2 advantages of the 215's over the 210's is shorter bearing surface and higher BC. The shorter bearing surface will get you more velocity. Overall, the 215's will give you over 100 m more effective range.

The slower powders like H1000 and Retumbo do better in the higher volume to bore cartridges and longer barrels, especially with heavier bullets. Chances are you will see more velocity from H1000 than H4831sc and more velocity from Retumbo than H1000.

Running your MV, BC and elevation, I am showing you a little shy of 1800 fps @ 788 m

A thread in which I shared one of my experiences with the Berger 210gr Hunting VLD on black bear. This was a finishing shot at very close range. Just to give you an idea of the bullet's performance at higher impact velocity.

The moose was standing broadside. This bullet entered between two ribs with a calibre size hole, went directly through the heart and hit a rib on the far side. It then travelled 2 to 3 in laterally along the rib before lodging in flesh.

My best guess would be that there was something obstructing the tip of the bullet. Either the tip had been damaged inside the mag box from previous shots slamming it around or the tip of the hollow point had an obstruction inside. I've ha a few Bergers that I couldn't even get a needle a 1/16 -1/8" into the hollow point. As where without any obstructions at least a solid 1/4" into the hollow point freely. I'd talk to Eric from Berger here on the board and see what he thinks.. He'll probably want to take a closer look at it.

The reason I think this is I've had Bergers open up as they should with lower energy then you speak of having upon impact.

Having read the other thread, I think you're probably right. These weren't mag fed, so the tips should have been good.

It could have been a blocked or fouled tip, but I also think there is a good chance that velocity was too low, especially being the target bullets.

These pics look like the photos Forum member 'elkaholic' has posted of Berger bullets that he's tested at similar impact velocity in water and other bullet expansion testing media.

Good job. Would probably have been a 1 shot and down but for
bullet issues. The things to tune up next time are all quantifiable
variables.
