Hi all,

I am considering building a 300 Win mag. but would like to get max vel. from this cartridge with min. increase in recoil. I am aspiring to hit lower end 300 Dakota or Weatherby velocities from the 300 Win. mag cartridge with below improvements:

What approx. max velocities (or increased powder capacity) can I expect with 168gr. TSX or 180gr. Scirrocco type bullets from doing two things, using a 25" barrel:

1. Improving the case to 40 degrees. Redding has dies for a 300 Winchester Magnum imp. 40 degrees

2. "...remove the magazine box spacer, trim the bolt stop back and then install a 300 Weatherby follower and spring. This, coupled with Winchester's long throats found in their Mod 70's, allows us to increase the 300 Win's COL to 3.540" with both the Nosler 180 and 200 grain partitions. This gains back some of the volume lost in the 300 Win with the standard COL of 3.340"."

If I can eek out 3200+fps using a 180gr. bullet and about 3375fps using a 165-168 gr. bullet, I'd be extremely happy and will probably go ahead with the project.

Finally, and most important, if I am stuck somewhere with no ammo, can I safely use regular 300 win. mag. Factory Ammo with these modifications (albeit at lower velocities)?

300 Win mag IMP gain wil be very small 300 win mag already own a short neck , straightened wall body

If you want a good wildcat in rather short case with 300 win mag rechambering a 30/338 RUM is nice with plenty of powder romm and NO FIREFORMING , if you need /want you can even adjust your case lenght by runing a 30/338 RUM reamer a bit shoter to get the same lenght as 300 WIN mag and prefect mag box use

good shooting

My Rem Sendero 26" breaks 3400 FPS with 165's and came close to your 3200 with 180's. I don't know what powders you have access to. For all the trouble your gain might not be worth it.

get a Border Barrels 5R from JR. I get 50 fps faster with the same ammo with my 21.5" 5R than i did with the previouse Heym hammer forged 24" barrel.

hmmm...anyone have a 300 Dakota?

It sems that it may not be worth rechambering to a 300 Dakota if the gain over the 300 win mag is only about 100fps or less. I thought it was more than that?

I have a 300Win mag 29" barrel and shoot 180grain TSX Superior Ammunition factory load and get 3150fps and they shoot.4moa does this help sorry for being so late just seen your post
