Hi all,
I am considering building a 300 Win mag. but would like to get max vel. from this cartridge with min. increase in recoil. I am aspiring to hit lower end 300 Dakota or Weatherby velocities from the 300 Win. mag cartridge with below improvements:
What approx. max velocities (or increased powder capacity) can I expect with 168gr. TSX or 180gr. Scirrocco type bullets from doing two things, using a 25" barrel:
1. Improving the case to 40 degrees. Redding has dies for a 300 Winchester Magnum imp. 40 degrees
2. "...remove the magazine box spacer, trim the bolt stop back and then install a 300 Weatherby follower and spring. This, coupled with Winchester's long throats found in their Mod 70's, allows us to increase the 300 Win's COL to 3.540" with both the Nosler 180 and 200 grain partitions. This gains back some of the volume lost in the 300 Win with the standard COL of 3.340"."
If I can eek out 3200+fps using a 180gr. bullet and about 3375fps using a 165-168 gr. bullet, I'd be extremely happy and will probably go ahead with the project.
Finally, and most important, if I am stuck somewhere with no ammo, can I safely use regular 300 win. mag. Factory Ammo with these modifications (albeit at lower velocities)?
