I was browsing around on here recently and it occured to me that I havent seen anyone talk about a .270 build or using one at long ranges. I know the ballistics are pretty good and bullet choices are pretty broad so is there anyone out here that uses the 270. I currently have one 270 and am fairly familiar with some loads and such and would love to start a project on a long range 270 if anyone can drop some hints or advice.

Actually there are a lot more bullet choices (and better ballistics) for calibers such as the 6mm, 7mm, .308 cal, .338 cal, etc. The 270 Winchester is a darn good deer/hog hunting cartridge though.

Look here for some good long range info from people who compete at long range:

Look up matrix bullets. They sell 165 and 175 VLD's. I have .277 with a 29 inch 8.5 pound barrel. If enough of us start using .277 it will become a good round. I have both 270 Win. and 270 AI

I have a 243 also. We were shooting metal tanks this weekend. With the closest at 285 yards. The 6 mm can punch a hole. The 270 has the horse power to tear the back sides of the tanks up on the way out. .243 100 gr. bt @ 3200 fps VS .277 150 gr. BT going 3100 fps The 277 has a higher BC so they probably hit the targets at the about the same speed. The extra 50 grains is lots of energy

270: My first rifle ever. One of my favorite calibers. My most often chosen rifle on hunts around here where I can rifle hunt (Kentucky, Missouri, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina).

I have 2 and a 3rd will be built very shortly. My Krieger barrel has waited long enough.

Thought hard about a WSM but I am pretty sure I'll just do another 270 Win.

Don't know what "long ranges" means to you but I've got a 150 VLD load in one of them that I would use on the biggest of bull elk at 500-800 yards w/o hesitation. I don't think I'd consider the bigger bullets by Matrix in the regular 270 Win simply because I think you'd be getting over the "benefits" curve from velocity loss. I could be wrong!

I'd reserve the Matrix bullets for a 270 AM, 270 Weatherby, or WSM.

    Powders: 4831, 4350, Re22, Re19, H1000, VV N160, VV N165.

    Try magnum primers!

This statement is true. People get so hung up on the biggest bullet that they forget what it takes to drive it at it's high BC velocity. the 270 case is limited to about 60 grains of powder and the 270 AI about 65 gr.

I don't think I'd consider the bigger bullets by Matrix in the regular 270 Win simply because I think you'd be getting over the "benefits" curve from velocity loss. I could be wrong!.....
