load workup for 300 RUM...

Here are the loads I've tested so far (last 2 weeks) and some rough notes on each. I'm shooting a Remington Sendero SF II , scoped w/ a Huskemaw 5-20LR.

Nosler Accubond, 200g loads:
93g Retumbo, 3.61 OAL, CCI250 : 3045FPS avg, poor accuracy (2.3" @ 100)
89.5g RL25, 3.61 OAL, CCI250 : 2995FPS avg, poor accuracy (2" @ 100)
91g RL25, 3.61 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3050FPS avg, OK accuracy (1.75" @ 100)
92g RL25, 3.61 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3075FPS avg, OK accuracy (1.5" @ 100)
95g Magnum, 3.61 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3055FPS avg, OK accuracy (1.6" @ 100)
97g Magnum, 3.61 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3075FPS avg, OK accuracy (1.5" @ 100)
98g Magnum, 3.61 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3204FPS avg, Good accuracy (1.1" @ 100)

Barnes Tipped TSX (LRX), 200g loads:
87g Retumbo, 3.62 OAL, CCI250 : 2890FPS avg, Good accuracy (1.1" @ 100) <- this was a 5 shot group with 1 flyer...4 of 'em were sub-MOA
85g RL25, 3.62 OAL, CCI 250 : 2910FPS avg, Good accuracy (1.2" @ 100)

I've got some more loads built, just need time to go shoot/record them. I'm slowly dialing in the accuracy and bringing up the velocity. That load with 98g of Magnum was moving pretty fast, but there weren't any pressure warning signs.....

I'll keep reporting back (if you want) with the additional loads I've got worked up. I've got 5 more loads put together with the 200g TTSX that I need to get out and shoot. My Sendero seems to like that bullet.

Venom your gun must like the Ramshot magnum powder, mine hated it and even at minimum loads I had lots of pressure, my gun hated ramshot magnum powder. I had 7lbs I had to unload to get me some more retumbo. Goes to show you not every gun is created the same. Good luck and keep on shootin.

I'll keep fiddlin' with Retumbo too. My ultimate goals in loading for this new gun is:
- sub-MOA accuracy
- use a high BC bullet that's also got a good reputation for putting animals down quickly
- 200g minimum (otherwise I might as well go shoot a Win Mag or my 30-06)
- 3150 FPS

So....whatever gets me there safely is what I'll do. My gun does seem to like the Magnum powder so far, but I want to put some more rounds through it to confirm. I'm really curious what the TTSX/Magnum loads are gonna produce.

Headed out to the Logan range tonight to try out some more Magnum loads. All with 200g Barnes TTSX (LRX). I've got 3 loads w/ Magnum and 2 with RL-25 to test out. I'll post my results and loads later tonight. :)

Here's what I've got from tonight. Everything I tested tonight were loads using Barnes TTSX (LRX), 200g.

88.0g RL25, 3.62 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 2983FPS avg, OK accuracy (1.4" @ 100)
89.0g RL25, 3.62 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3047FPS avg, Poor accuracy (1.9" @ 100)
95.0g Magnum, 3.62 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3152FPS avg, Good accuracy (1.25" @ 100, 2.0" @ 200)
97.0g Magnum, 3.62 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3184FPS avg, Good accuracy (1.1" @ 100)
98.0g Magnum, 3.62 OAL, Rem 9 1/2M : 3237FPS avg, Good accuracy (1.6" @ 100, 1.0" @ 200)

I tried a couple of the loads at 200yds tonight and was pleasantly surprised. I've been reading (on this forum and elsewhere) that some loads take longer to 'settle down'. Both of the loads that I tried at 200 were more accurate there than at 100. In fact the biggest load of the night (98g Magnum) was 1/2 MOA at 200. :D

The big load (98g Magnum) showed slight pressure signs. Bolt was just a bit harder to lift than normal, but not bad. Some ejector impressions on the base of the case as well. But, it was screamin' and was pretty accurate. I might load some at 97.5g to see what happens.

Headed to Logan again in an hour to test some of these loads (7 of them actually) at 200yds. Based on what I saw last week, I'm hoping some of these will group better at 200yds.

edit: yeah.....never mind. 25mph crosswind at the range. Not exactly the best conditions. I skipped it and put some rounds through my .45 instead.

Yeah, I was wondering when I saw that storm rolling in...

There was a guy at the range who claimed to also be doing "load development". Not sure how he could have been getting much useful data...

Off topic, but I wonder if we could convince the club to put an internet connected weather station on the roof of the clubhouse.

OK, gonna try this again. :) Hopefully the conditions are decent tonight. Gonna head to Logan after work to do a bunch of shooting.

On the bright side, the delay has allowed me time to put together another 4 test loads using LRX and Retumbo. So, I've got a bunch of different loads to test out now.
