Could someone please explain what is wrong with using a stainless barrel on a blued action when it's really cold out there, like below 0*F ? I'm currently trying to choose a new barrel for my Rem 700. Several manufactures have warned not to use stainless tubes in the extreme cold. What ??

...I usually hunt elk in the mountains of Colorado, a 4 hr drive from where we live.
Yes, it gets cold in the winter. Sometimes winter comes during our hunt. Am planning to purchase a # 5 fluted for my 700, 7mm RM. ... So Stainless or CM ??

    Thanks in advance.

This has been a debate for a long time and has no merit.

Log on to Lilja barrels and look in the FAQ section he is one of the best barrel makers and
    has comments on this subject.

If you hunt in weather cold enough to make the barrel dangerous you are some where other
than Colorado . It would have to be several hundred degrees below zero and I don't think
that any barrel can be 100% safe at those temperatures plus it would not be safe for humans.

There is a metallurgical difference @ extreme temperatures in the two materials but they are
safe or they would not build them.

It boils down to preference . some like chrome Molly and some like stainless.

The only place I can see an advantage is in the really high pressure loads where the action
is under great stress ,the chrome Molly has a higher tensile strength and would increase the safety factor . (All components have a 2 two 1 safety factor so they are plenty strong but
with the really hot wildcats every little bit helps with the action supporting 70,000 + Psi.
