Heaton, King, Cassel and Co. dragged me over from accuratereloading.com. Now, I understand they're trying to send me back

Sorry, guys, no deposit, no return.

Most of what you're talking about here is WAY over my head, but, I'm learning.

Terrance, Crowblaster... welcome aboard... I think you'll find a better reception here on the extreme range stuff than some of the opinions on GGVG

I found this place after a few guys from here invaded my website, www.24hourcampfire.com

This stuff is extremely interesting to me. I started a "Long Range Hunting" forum on www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php, and Darryl said it would get some action from you guys, so I just hope some of you all visit, as I will here. This is super interesting!

Questions: For a brand new guy with a .300 Winchester and a boatload of McMillans (see Classifieds), can I get started with that, or do I need a hotter caliber?

I found the link during a rather heated discussion on LRH at Accurate Reloading. I believe it was one of Dave King's posts.

Frankly, I was in the camp of those who believed LRH to be a bit unethical. I was not opposed to it, yet I knew I would never do it. I felt that a hunter should and could get closer to insure a proper kill.

Having studied this site for a few weeks before joining, I now realise I was expressing an opinion on a subject of which I had very little knowledge. The dedication and specialisation I have been exposed to here is simply incredible. Certainly not a group of irresponsible hunters.

My most recent big bore rifle project has changed course because of this site. The intended nostalgia driven 500 NE single shot was to have iron sights and a short handy barrel. It will now be a .50 wildcat with another 12" of heavy tube sitting under a variable power target scope with a nice trigger. I will work with this rifle for a year studying, practicing, and raising havoc with the coyotes of Wyoming until my skill level is high enough to confidently go after game LRH style.

Regards,

Holmes ..welcome aboard...
I too am in Wyo. ( obviously ) .. where ya at??
I am a neophyte at this stuff as well.... and always looking for someone to go huntin' with...

Greetings and salutations, WyoWhisper.

I reside in Casper. My shooting has been restricted to the range for the last several months due to a little friend I had upstairs that required chemotherapy. Missed the 2001 season but I am recovering slowly but surely. Kinda ugly I am now, but hey, I was never much of a looker anyway.

I intend to make up for this snafu this year. Game animals and varmints beware!

Seriously, the situation has given me time to study ballistics better, improve my hand loading techniques, and concentrate on my basic shooting skills.

I'm hoping to get out in the field by April or May so I can get my physical condition back up to par. There is a huge goat out there in the prairie somewhere with my initials on it! And I have just the perfect load worked up for my quarter bore....

Thanks for the welcome and best regards.

~Holmes

What is the best powder to use with a .30-378 Wby Mag with the 180 grain Barnes XLC Coated X Bullet BT for Accuracy, Velocity, Energy? Has anyone ever tried this? Thank You

I found you purely through browsing, running a Google search on "longrange" I believe. This is an opportunity to say that this is a wonderful site. You can't get this first hand, state of the art, interactive information in any book, magazine, video or any other imaginable format. Folks here are very generous with thier knowledge from direct experinece. I'm getting answers to questions I've had for years. I can't say enough good about this site. Thanks to you all! Tommy

Found this site by a search a few months ago, been hanging around ever since. Unbeleavable amount of knowledge and experience here.
I went on my first elk trip to Colorado last year. Our guide had me set up on a hillside first morning. As it was breaking daylight I could see elk on the other side of the draw grazing in the Quakies, no bulls. After they moved on (with a little of my help :eek
smile.gif
got out the laser, it was 300yrds to the botom of the draw, 450-600yrds to where the elk were.
I've hunted Michigan all my life, longest shot has been under 150yds. I spent last summer at the range shooting at 300yrds prepairing for the trip out west, the terrain out there realy opened my eyes to long range hunting!
Here's my new long range project.
.338 Ultramag, Remington action.Krieger 28" heavy Barrel, with a Vais brake,(barrel is 28" not including brake). I'm steelbedding it into a McMilan Hunter stock. Jewel HRV trigger at 2.5lbs. Tossed the aluminum floor plate and trigger gaurd into the trash and machined one from stainless steel. Going to mount a Leupold 6.5-20 LRT scope on bases and rings I'm also machining out of stainless steel. Being a toolmaker with access to a CNC milling machine has its benifits!
