Just what kind of critters are you planning on shooting and at what range? I think that these two questions would be the basis on what it is that you "need" If its Elk out to 1000yds then I think that the 200gr Wildcat run out of the 7mm Allen mag would do it , would the 338-408 do it better? maybe probably give you a little wider range of shot options. I personaly don't see any critters in North America except maybe coastal brown bears needing more than a 7mm Allen mag with a missle launched out of it. If you can afford to go the 408 base case route then by all means do it , but I would go with the 338-408 because of the bullet selection. Berger is supposed to be commiong out with a 338 bullet , Serria makes a good one and Wildcat bullets makes several. I guess it realy depends on how mad at the animals you are!! Their a guy that has a Armalite AR-50 for sale with a complet set of reloading equiptment with it for $2500. You can't get much bigger than that and still be man portable.
