"My goal is little to no tracking; drop them in their tracks." It is not necessarily what you shoot them with as to where you shoot them in order to achieve your intended goal. You can use the "best bullet" in the world, which everybody has their favorite, and not hit CNS or break the front end bone structure sufficiently enough to end the animals ability to run and still have it go for a loooooog ways. In my experience which is vast on white tail the worst caliber I ever used for deer running off was the 7mm Rem. mag and it did not matter what bullet I used. If the CNS or front shoulders were not taken out they would go an average of 150 yards which was too far where I was hunting. Fields in east NC surrounded by cotton mouth infested swamp and jungle so thick you could hardly get through it. The deer would slosh on the inside when found but still ran off. Good luck and have fun but most of all practice your marksmanship so you can do what you are supposed to do, put the bullet where it needs to go. Be confident in your ability. Don't take those long shots unless you are really sure you have the ability to read the wind and know your drops and have the rifle and skill to place that bullet precisely where it needs to go. A gut shot black bear is a mean thing to have to go searching in the bush after.
