    Hi fellas!

    Been a member for a while now but haven't got around to post anything until now.

    I have a Rem 700 that I rebarreled a year ago from 308 to 260 and I'm getting (what I can tell) extreme velocities that kinda kicks 6,5-284 in the ass but maybe you guys can spread some light over what's doable and whats not.

    Using the Hornady 140 grains SST along with 45 grains of Norma MRP gives me a velocity of 2919,95 f/s which sounds pretty high in my world, what do you more experienced 260-shooters think?

    To add some details... The chamber is tight, real tight! The go-gauge fits precisely so that will probably hide some of the preassure signs. I do get some light marks on the brass from the boltface but nothing else, not one sign of preassure on the primers.

    Haven't run QL on it, but it doesn't seem high to me.
    And it's nowhere near 6.5x284 velocity capabilities(3200-3400fps).

    Sounds ok to me I was pushing 2950 in a 27" barrel with 140g amax and H4350.

    Hi again!

    @Mikecr - Perhaps it's just my friends that doesn't use the right powders or something.

    @J E Custom - Thanks a bunch! I did get some marks from the ejector so I took your advise but even before you gave it :D and backed down to 43 grains cause the ES was almost as good as at 45 grains. In between gave really shitty ES.

    @ICANHITHIMMAN - Thanks!

    @jakelly - It's 24"

    Perhaps it's just us swedes that are a little bit cautious since both 6,5-284 and 6,5-06 users have been complaining about me overloading since I get similar velocities that they do. Åke Nilsson at Norma wrote me that my load gives theoretically 4500-4600 bars of preassure which is a bit too much.

    Maybe it is a powder issue since we have problems getting the right stuff over here or what do you guys think?

    The preasure signs that I look for is marks on the case head and of course if the bolt is hard to open.

    /Bobby

    You might just be lucky, 2919fps out of a 260 with a 24 inch barrel is quick (150+ fps I would guess), some barrels are just fast. This variance can be pretty big, like 280s that shoot same weight bullets faster than 7mm Rems, so Congratulations! that's sweet. If your anomaly has a sporter weight barrel that is a really special rig.

    It's a Lothar Walther barrel with remington varmint profile and I'm not sure what that qualifies for. :)

    I don't see where you are kicking any ass any where with the 260
    with your 2919.
    when I am getting 3151 fps with 140 hornady's in my 6.5x284
    so you can jump down from your soap box now !

    It wasn't my meaning to make it sound so serious, sorry for that. What I had in mind was my friends rifle which (for some reason) barely makes that kind of velocity which you guys obviously couldn't have known.

    Again... Sorry for that. :)

    if you want speed in a 6.5 caliber get a 6.5 rem mag or a 264 mag both of these will beat all the rest. I have both of them.

    What length barrel and powder is giving you 3200-3400 with a 6.5-284 and 140 grain bullet? I've never heard that speed even in a 264 mag. Maybe 3200, but 3400??

    You're right, my bad on 3,400 with a 140, this side of military surplus powders.
    Sorry

    "I do get some light marks on the brass from the boltface but nothing else,"

    That IS your sign of excessive pressure. Primers are a poor indicator of anything but excessive headspace.

    There is no magic that can subsitute for cubic inches. The ONLY way to get 6.5-.284 speeds from a .260 is significant excess pressure.
