Die harding ?

Is it completely nessasary to harded a full length die after having it cut with a sizing reamer?
 
Soft dies scratch more easily than hard ones but the real reason size dies are cased is to reduce wear.

An unhardened die will certainly work as well as a hardened one if you keep the brass clean and well lubed. But there is no way it will last as long, perhaps for only several thousand reloads, instead of tens of thousands?
