You guys shooting the 338 class of rifles, the larger capacity cases......what powder/powders are you using to give a dense charge....such that the base of the bullet is atop the powder??

    Thanks!

What do you define, as a larger case capacity?

Specifically the 338 Lapua cartridge and likewise capacity! My son has a TRG-42 that shoots fair back to 1400 yds. but I want to 'spearmint' some to decrease group size down to about 8" or less! The older powders won't give me a dense charge and H1000 is about the same way! RETUMBO.....has been a thought but I haven't tried it as yet!!

I use 94 grains Retumbo in my .338 RUM for a velocity of 2750fps, on the nose, out of a 26" barrel. you have a little more room so that would be on the slow end for you. useing 300 SMKs it shoots under 3/4" @ 200yards eveytime when I do my part. I havent gone past 600 yards with that load, but it is defenatly better than I am. I have been extremly happy with the temp. stability of the Hodgdon Extreme powders and dont think Ill really use any thing else.

    Sharpsman,

For 338 Kahn, 338 Edge, and 338 RUM, my go-to powder has become Retumbo. My favorite used to be RL 25 and I still get the best performance with some bullets with it, but it is the most temperature sensitive of the ones I have used.

Other options are: H-1000, N170, N570, US869, and H50BMG, with the last two being the slowest burning and best for heavy bullets...... There are others of course, but these are the ones I have played with.
