[QUOTE="crediger, post: 138005, member: 6701"] I don't say much on these boards at all but the bashing of old bears shot actually annoys me... he made a great shot and sounds like he had a great experience during the hunt... One point that i have to make is that the animal is dead (no longer breathing), where he meant to place the bullet and where it actually went in this case is not an issue to debate the animal is already dead and in his freezer also it died quickly for all you bleeding hearts out there, alot quicker than a chest shot... In my opinion from what old bear and others on this post have said about his shooting ability leads me to believe that indeed he was actually aiming at the head not at the heart and lungs... i know that 1203 yrds is a long shot but to be aiming at the elks chest area and hit its head is a very lucky shot if he missed... remember an elk is not a deer so its head would be around three feet away from the "classic" spot to shoot game as well as possibly higher or lower than a lung shot... The second point that i would like to make is that if the animal was hit in the jaw do you really think it would still be up running around??? chances are it wouldn't be... have you ever been hit in the jaw it hurts like hell doesn't it, now have you been knocked out??? you can't really do much when your knocked out.. so you figure bullet going around 2500 fps hitting an animal in the jaw wouldn't rattle it enough to knock it out for a little bit, chances are that it would even kill the animal just from the force of impact. Rattling something in the head is usually a bad thing... On the other hand if you are not confident in making a shot out to 1203 yrds don't do it because most likely you would miss... old bear seems to be an accomplished long range hunter so don't bash on a good clean kill... I have seen people miss at much closer distances than 1203yrds, I have actually seen people mortally wound an animal at 25yrds and not be able to find the kill until the birds have found it the next day. I myself am not comfortable at shooting anything over 500yrds but i haven't practiced anything further than that so i will not take a shot over that distance, I am actually amazed at the shots that some of the people on these boards take, and from what i have read the majority have been clean kills..
