I read the investigation report, the idiot was holding it in his hand and using it to beat on the pins to the mount. Primer went off and this is the result. I'm sorry brother, but a high powered rifle shell will freaking exode! Had a stupid E-7 toss a belt of about 20 rounds of 7.62 into a fire we were standing by. They didn't go poof. As far as the bullets flying everywhere like they were shot out of a barrel, that's a different subject. I've also seen the results of a soldier opening the top cover of a 7.62 machine gun that experienced a stoppage. A round had been cooking partially chambered in a hot barrel, when he pulled the charging handle to the rear and opened the feed cover the round exploded in his face. Brass peppered his face (lucky he was wearing safety glasses), knocked him out momentarily and gave him a mild concusion. I know what you are gonna say, the round was still in the receiver and it focused a lot of the pressure up. This is true, however there was no simple poof. It was an explosion that could have been catastrophic.
