Chambering to Ackley Improved question

Can changing a rile chamber to AI - can this be reliably done on a built rifle, or does the barrel need to be removed and replaced?

I'm thinking about improving:
.223
22-250
.243

You can use the existing barrel, but the barrel needs to be removed and set back about a turn as the head space on Ackley Improved cartridges is shorter than that of the 'parent' cartridge. You get a 'fresh' throat that way, too..
