I am getting ready to build another rig but not sure on the caliber yet. I already have a 338 lapua and a 6.5x55 swede. I am thinking of a 308. Anyone have a better suggestion? It will be an all around gun hunting and target shooting. Ryan

300 WSM? It gets you a middle caliber with more reach if your shooting game with it.

I just went through the very same issue :) I picked up a 338LM then built a 300RUM and needed something in-between that I could basically have for fun and hunting. I am building a heavy short barrel (20") 308. The 308 uses 1/2 the powder the other to big sticks shoot and I can put plenty of rounds down range working on my skills.

My decision came down to a usable, affordable, and fun to shoot rifle that I put together myself.

30-284 (Wildcat) or 300WSM is nice for all round hunting.

.308 isn't a bad choice, but the .260 Rem would be an even better choice and uses the same case.

Faster, flatter, and does both with higher BC bullets, and recoil isn't a consideration at all even for a kid or woman.

The only advantage I see with the .308 is the availability of cheap plinking ammo.

It will be on a savage short action. The rifle is a 22-250 right now that I dont like. I have a 270 wsm that is my favorite hunting rifle. Tell me more about the 30-284

The 308 is never a bad choice. You can beat it in SOME respects by going down or you can beat it in SOME respects by going up but you cant beat it from every angle. Aside from recoil, and more trajectory (who cares about trajectory any more?) with modern high BC bullets available, when it comes to windage and energy, the 308 can run with and in many cases, out shine the 260 and 7mm08.

She sure isn't as sexy as some of the other girls but she sure puts out and performs.

    308 Gets my vote.

I was also thinking of mentioning the 30x284 if you are into wildcats, it has been used on occasion for 1000 yard br, dies are available from redding, the best way to go about it is to get 6.5x284norma brass, either the norma or lapua brand run them through a 284win fl die, then through the 30x284 fl die. It fills the middle ground between 30-06 and 300win mag, just shy of the 300wsm, but has longer barrel life than the win mag or wsm and is slightly more accurate than the tried and true 06, in a 26" 11 twist barrel with the proper throat it will break the 3000fps mark with 185grn berger vlds and H4350 and is easy on cases. A cheaper way is to get winchester brand 284 cases and do a single pass in the 30x284 fl die but the cases do not last as long. It is a very accurate, easy to load, fun to shoot caliber with moderate recoil or virtually none with a muzzle brake. The regular 284win with a long throat shooting 168 vlds is also a very efficient round. The 284 is simply an awesome case for all non magnum wildcats.

    I second the 308.
I have a 338 Ultra mag, a 7mm/300Wby, and a 25-06. I picked up a Rem. 700 SPS Tactical in 308 that has a 20 inch tube at the beginning of the year and have had a blast shooting it and working up loads out to 500 meters. It is my short range ( to 500 yds ) go to carry rifle.

Ok, so I made the commitment and pulled the old barrel off of my rifle. I decided on just doing a 308. I will be going with a pacnor med palma now I just need to know what twist rateand barrel length? I am wanting to run the 168 gr berger vld or something around that weight.

    My 308W has a 22" barrel 5-R Krieger 11 twist. And shoots everything from 110 gr V-Max @ 3300 to 210 gr bergers at AV 2335. I normally shoot a 175 bergers with 46.5 gr H-4895 for 2770.

Mine is a 28" 1:12 twist. I find this to be the optimal twist for a 155-190 grain bullets. I am getting great results with the 168 Nosler Ballistic Tip. I am going to order some 168 Berger Hybrids and give them a run to 1000yds. With a BC of .519 and being the Hybrid design, I have high hopes for this bullet at that distance. I would say 24-26" would be a good carry length weight barrel. Mine is a Savage varmint contour. No flutes. Thinking about your application a 24" would be the best fit. It gives you enough length to get you as far as you want to shoot, w/o suffering any major muzzle velocity loss. Using RL15, AR Comp, or Varget will get you to around 2600-2675 with a 175grn bullet. You will be looking at 2700-2750 with a 168. That would be sufficient to do what you want.

For a 308, I would never go with anything slower than a 12x. With a 12x you can stabilize 200's (except for all copper) but it is not an optimum combo. For 165-190's, the 12x will serve you well. For 190-210, the 11x will do well. Anything over that go 10x.

All that said, the 11x works well with 150-190 grain bullets. It is my favorate twist for the 308 but my next one will be 10 for some of the mono metal bullets.
