Bolt face diameter's

If one was changing from a .223 bolt face which is .384 to a 6mm ppc which is .441, would I still be able to use the .223 extactor.

If it is a Remington 700 or Plunger style extractor, the answer is no, a Sako Style extractor would have to be installed. If it is a Mauser style extractor like a Pre 64 Winchester or Ruger, the Mauser style extractor could be modified to extract the case with no problem.

Thanks, I was just trying to figure this out on a post I wrote ''is enough ever really enough''. Also thank you for your comment on said post.
This was informitave and appreciated

If I am understanding correctly, sometimes a slim to none option.

The following can be rebarreled to 6.5x55Swede .476" 3.03" with a barrel swap. Because bolt face diameter is close, and operating under the assumption that american 6.5x55 have a .473" bolt face, Lapua Brass is .476" and cases where bolt face diameter are few.

And, the following will work magazine wise because of OAL.

SMALL BORES
224Clark .473" 3.08"

240WbyMag .473" 3.08"

240Apex (BeltedNE) .475" 3.21"

25-'06Rem .473" 3.25"

6.5x55Swede .476" 3.03"

6.5mm-'06A-Square .473" 3.2"

270Win 473" 3.35

7x64Brenneke .473" 3.3"
280Rem .473" 3.33"

30-'06Springfield .473" 3.34"

8mm-'06Spr .473" 3.18"
8x60S .473" 3.1"

MEDIUM BORES
Caliber Case head (inches) Length (inches)

338-'06A-Square .473" 3.34"

35Whelen .473" 3.26"

9.3x62Mauser .473" 3.29"

Note: If I ever run across a 35W and buy it, it won't be for converting.

this is awesome. any-chance someone smarter then i could update it with calibers like the 6.5 creedmoor, 338 edge, 375 chytec, 408 chytec and others.

thanks lsm62

I would update it but it is a sticky and someone would have to lift the sticky long enough to change
it and then close it again.

I had not looked at it in a couple of weeks and was supprised that it has over 20,000 views.

I am glad it has helped some of the members.

I have a Rem 700 long action chambered at the factory for 8x57. From what I can gather my bolt face is 0.47" My internal magazine has plenty of length left over with the 8x57.

I thought I would be all set with doing a barrel swap to 6.5x284 Norma, but now I see that cartridge has a rebated rim which is 0.473, but the base is actually 0.5". Will my bolt work, or will it need to be modified/replaced ?

Looks like there are 4 primary bolt face dimensions. These look to be the inner dimensions where the bullet casing recesses - correct? How many primary bolt (outer diameter) sizes are there? 4 also? What would the outer dimensions be? Thanks in advance for you response.

The bolt diameters are the same for all 700's. There are 2 lengths....short action and long. There are 4 main bolt face diameters (I'm pretty sure they made a .440" bolt face for .220 Russian/PPC at one point) They are .221/.222/.223 at .378, .243/7-08/.308 at .473, 7rm/300wm/300rum at .532, and 338 Lapua at .578. They only make the larger 3 in long action and the 3 smaller ones in short action.
