Hey guy's I know this has probably been asked here before but I'd like your thoughts again if you would please:) I'm planning to do another custom build off of a Savage model 12 action I have, I'm wanting to build a long range 7mm 08, I'm wanting to shoot the 150's up to a 168gn bullets, what is in your opinion the best twist and grove I should use? I have been looking at allot of barrel manufactures so your thoughts on barrels and lengths for this type of shooting I would appreciate as well, thanks guy's:D

1:9 twist will be fine up to 180gr bullets.

If you are wanting a barrel look at bugholes.com or Third Generation Shooting Supply both have several 7mm 1:9 twist in various contours available. I just picked up a 7mm 1:8 twist Krieger heavy palma from 3rdgen a few weeks ago. Ordered on friday, had it on tuesday...

26" will gain you more velocity over the 24". I prefer my precision rifle barrels to be 26" at minimum, unless on a .308 Win, in which case 24" minimum, unless it is a special purpose gun, then 20" is the minimum.

that was gonna be my next question what powders seem to work best with the 162gn A-MAX? this is the bullet I was planning to shoot for long range steel, I'm thinking a 25'' barrel with a SureFire MB and a Stockade P. Dog stock properly bedded:D

If you can find it...Hodgdon Varget. I use it in all my .308-derrived calibers (7mm-08, .308, .22-250, etc...). But right now it is VERY hard to find. I ise it for my .308 Win and my 7mm-08, but I have a fair stash of it, and don't shoot my calibers that use it, like I used to, because it's so hard to find. Once it gets back to normal, then I'll be buying up a couple jugs (8lb) at a time of my commonly used powders so I'll have a great stash for anymore hard times that may arise (God forbid, I can't handle this overpriced, powder & bullet dry-spell crap again).

I'm new to the 7mm08 but not to the 308win, gun)

You will gain approx. 30'/sec per inch of barrel with that cartridge. I have a bartlein 5R in 30 caliber that I like. My favorite barrel is a 4 groove Kreiger on my 30/375 S.I........Rich

I was wondering also if their is a better grove for this caliber and twist? {7mm08} I just put a Brux 4 grove 1 in10 twist in my 308win build, I'm not real familiar with the bores in the 7mm's and their twists so I'm hoping to learn all I can before I start this rifle build, I think for me the 7mm08 will fill a few gaps between the 223rem and the 308win and with the better BC of the 7mm I my give up the 223rem in a bolt rifle, just a thoughtgun)
