What is the best bullet to handload in a 454 Casull and stop a charging bear? I don't need to know all the legalities. Thanks, Beefstick.

I like the 300gr or 325gr class of bullets for the 454 . the 265s shoot nice and easy but
for a stopper the 300 or 325gr would be my choice.

I shoot a lot of the 300gr core bond ammo and it is tough but that's what you would want
when a bear decides to take out his anger on you.

It also works on large hogs that don't go down easy and decide to run you up a tree.

When i worked at a gun shop a guy came in to buy a 12ga double barrel. He wanted to cut the barrel to 18in and shoot slugs out of it. i ask him how far he was planning on shooting it. He ploped his leg up on the counter and told me when the bear has your leg in his mouth you just put the barrel against his head and pull the trigger. His leg was all scared up. He told me that he used to be a fishing guide in alaska.

Check out Cast Prformance and Beartooth Bullets. They are makers of the finest hard-cast lead bullets on earth! I shoot 300 gr. LFNGC in my 45 colt. They stop Big black bears in their tracks. (with proper shot placement of course.) Complete penetration, head to tail if needed.
I would shoot at least a 325 gr. even up to 350 gr. in the Cassull. Plenty of horsepower in the case. Also a larger Meplat delivers a heavier blow.
For loaded ammo check out Corbon, and Buffalo Bore.gun)

I agree or the spray and pray method would work well also.

One that hits him in the spine or brain, he won't care what brand, model or caliber it is.

Glad I could help. Beartooth has a 345 Gr. WLN that I think would be perfect for you. It has a .360" meplat. Tons of initial smack plus great penetration.
Thats what I'd use. Good luck.gun)
