My interests right now are leaning towards the 6BG, as it solves several issues with rounds using the .243 case as a parent. Yet it pushes a bullet as fast as the .243 case with what looks tobe three or more times the barrel life. Does this with about 70% of the powder. The smaller cases allow the use of a shorter barrel, and that's a big plus. My 6BR uses a 22.75" barrel, and is a 14 twist. I shoot mostly 70 thru 80 grain bullets thru it in the 3200fps area with 6 grains less powder than the .243 does while loosing about 75 fps.
boy you hit that nail on the head! Most of us here fail to look at the whole picture, when looking at case and barrel designs. The .243 design in itself is a poorly designed case that works best with 80 thru 95 grain bullets. Too short a bullet creats all sorts of reloading problems, and too long a bullet puts it deep inside the case body. Then there's the issue of the vortex of the flame path ending up right inside the throat (some folks call this the turbulence point). This is what gives you the 800 round barrel life. There is not a tremendous difference between the standard 6mm Remington and the .243 Winchester at the shoulder in length. The cases are similar in capacity, but one shoots much better. Then we throw in the 6XC and it's clan of derivities into the mix. They don't hold as much powder, but yet shoot just about as well! Even a 6BR can push a 105 grain Amax out to about 3000fps, but more importantly have three times the barrel life! Perhaps somebody is trying to tell us something? I have owned several 6mm's thru the years, and currently shoot the 6/250AI (very similar to a 6XC improved), and a 6BR. Will be glad when my 6BG reamers finally show up! gary
