Well we have had this in our safe for quite some time and no one seems to know where it came from so I think its good sporter material as its already broke up a bit. Has anyone sporterized one? What all can be done with one? I know the 98 can be really built into neat sporters but I don't know about the cock on close mausers.
    Thanks guys

Weak action with poor gas handling in case of rupture means if you sporterize it, I'd leave it in a mild caliber like 35 Remington or in that class. Some COO conversions are available for the pre-98 mausers, but I don't recall seeing one for a 91 - Brownells had some Dayton Traisters for 96s last I checked. Triggers are also an issue with the pre-96 mausers; not too many aftermarkets around, so you're usually stuck with the issue trigger.

    Have fun with it!

It is what it is, a 7.65 Belgian Mauser.

I was thinking about a shorter barrel and a nice stock. Prob drill and tap for a scope, would a 6.5x55 create to much pressure for it? Or 7mm mauser?

YOU WILL HAVE TROUBLE WITH THE TRIGGER, AND EXTRACTORS ARE THE WEAKEST LINKS IN THE CHAIN, GOOD LUCK FINDING A REPLACEMENT.

PROBABLE AT ITS BEST IN A 7x57 OR 257 ROBERTS KEEP THE PRESSURE BELOW 45,000.

THE BOLT HAS A DIFFERENT LUG CONFIGURATION. KEEP IN MIND SAFETEY.

I BUILT A COUPLE MANY YEARS AGO. MANAGED TO PUT A DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS FROM OTHER MAUSER, AS I COULD NOT FIND ANY BETTER TRIGGER.

STOCK OWRK WILL HAVE TO BE CUSTOM, OTHERWISE ITS A LIGHTWEIGHT ACTION WITHOUT THE HEAT TREATMENT.

ITS AS SOFT AS AN OVIEDO 93
