A 200 gr bullet @ 3000 fps is pretty serious medicine for any game. The 180 gr TSX can be driven to 3300 fps in the Rem and would make a pretty fair mule deer/ elk long range number. 195 gr Hornadys or the 200 gr Speer make dandy bullets for practice or slightly reduced loads for deer.
I bought a 700 BDL in 8mm Rem back in the early 1980's. As already stated the factory ammo was underloaded. Most of the bullets on the market were designed for the 8x57 and come apart at 8mm rem velocities. Hornady and Sierra quickly produced 220 bullets and Speer brought out a 200 bullet that works real well. Noslers, Swifts and Barnes came later. The 8mm Rem was already in trouble by then. The 8mm seems to be a calibre that likes a little longer barrel. If I was putting a new barrel on in 8mm Rem it would definitly be 26 in long. I have used several bullets in mine but have setted on the 200 gr TSX Barnes bullet with a max load of RL22. RL 25 is good and would be the powder of choice with 220 gr slugs. The 8mm Rem will likely continue to fade but mine is NOT for sale. I have a lifetime supply of cases and there are lots of bullet choices now.
