I am one of those that feel All WSM's benefit from a center feed mag box. If you convert from another cartridge you have to open the guide rails up to fit the WSM and this can be tricky, but doable, Stagger feed mags load buy starting off center and ending up centered on the chamber. this process can damage the bullet tip and can mar the case. Center feed mags start the round on center and load directly into the chamber without ever touching the bullet if set up correctly. Many of the factory stagger feed rifles are marginal at best and can sometimes cause a malfunction in feeding more that one round or simply not holding more than two well. the center feed solves this. Short magnums have there place, especially in compact rifle needs and perform very well if loaded and cared for properly. Only match shooters that routinely shoot 100+ rounds a month have a barrel wear problem. There are MANY barrel burners other that the WSM's and under normal hunting and siteing in will never give a problem to there owners if taken care of. I am a 270 fan myself, but bullet selection is not as good as the 7 mm and 30 cal bullets and with a larger case capacity than other WSM's it has a slight advantage. I have owned All of the WSM's and settled for the 7 WSM and the 338 RCM for my use. I don't let cases become a problem or a reason not to build a rifle with the cartridge I want because with patience I have been able to find brass in quantities that will keep the rifle fed and when a deal presents it's self, I will buy extra just in case. (Brass has a good shelf life). Also I like to find out what other brass I can use to make the cartridge I want just in case, but have not had to rely on alternate cartridge cases to continue loading for any of the less available cases J E CUSTOM
