7 08 remington or 7 08 AI

I chose the regular 708 route when I re barreled my BBR 243 ,thought a longer barrel was the cheapest way to more speed. # 3 contour ch/moly 27 inch 1-9 twist Lilja bbl.while im sold on varget from past experience 308 win and 708 pistol, ive been trying h414 , h4350, and they all are showing good results. at 100 yds , so far 120 speer hot core spz,140 sierra spz,150 sierra bts 160 sierra bts and 168 sierra match kings are shooting 5/8 cto c 3 shot groups not deducting .284 dia from group size. the 150 swift was edged out as was the 140 nosler btip and the 145 speer grand slam, granted they need more testing all good bullets in their own rite.

at 600 yrds I tested the 160 sbt and they shot5.5 moa,ran out of 168 smkings, more shooting needed loaded up some 150 smkings haven't shot them yet.plan to test the 168 berger vld hunting bullets soon.
168 smking w-w,f210m,h414/ 45.5 grs/ tmv 2730 over 35-p
160 sbt,w-w f210m,h4350/46.0grs/tmv2780
140 rem acctip,w-w,f210m,h4350/ 48.0 gr/tmv 2908 1 inch cto c
120 speer ht= hot core,w-w ,rem9.5 primer varget/45.0grs/tmv3146/35-p again.

match bullets 7mm are Speer 145 gr,Sierra 130,150,168,175,Hornady 162 a-max, Nosler ballistic tips shoot like match bullets if your bbl likes them ,so long live the 708 Remington what ever flavor you chose , regards jjmp

Varget is also a very good powder for the 7/08and the 7/08x40.

For your sons 7/08 try 45.5 grains of Varget or 49.0 grains of H 414 with the 120 grain Ballistic tip.
also use the CCI Br2 primer.

These are my best loads for the 7/08. the H-4350 works best in the 7/08x40.

I just so happen to have 3 pounds of H4350. Any recommendations on a starting load? I assume it is similar numbers to the IMR4350. For the AI, from what I have read, it can shoot 10% greater powder volume than the regular, but I start half way through what's recommended for the regular 708 and go up from there. Nosler recommends 42-46 grains with IMR 4350 and the 140 g bullet.

For the 7/08 AI I would start at 45 grains and work up to max (Should be around 47or 48 grains)
for an alternative H 4831 SC is also good and starting load should be 45 to 46 grains.

Start loads low and work up (All rifles are different in what may be Max).

Try cfe-223. In my sako 85 finnlite with 20.5" I avg 3275fps with 120 ttsx and is very accurate, 1/2 moa. And also if your barrel is clean when you start it stays clean. I have about 40-50 shots through it since last cleaning and there is no copper fouling.

So I am going to play around with H4350, IMR4350, H4831SC. I've got some freshly resized, trim and prepped clean brass to try and some I need to clean so it might be a few weeks.

I was getting good velocity with the IMR4350, I think around 3100 with the 140 AB @3/4 MOA. The trigger on the gun is horrible when compared to my others. I just ordered a spring kit for it. So, it should be around 2lbs on the next shooting session instead of 3.5-4.

tested my 708 with the 150 sierra match kings r-p case cci-200 pri 47 grs of h4350 tested 2845 fps and 3shots grouped .650@100 yds, I was 1.5 grains low of max which was 48.5 ive computed they should brake 2914 to 2909 fps in my 708.

loaded some 168 vld hunting bergers w-w-case cci-200 pri max charge of 47/h4350 grains tested 2781 fps. man that's one long bullet my clip is 2803. did a test with that 168 berger after shooting them loads at the range my oal is 3050 ,i was compressing my powder while setting the bullets. shot loads showed no pressure signs, but I shot over my target at 500 yds so no group my goof, day was long no lunch 9 hours I was tried.

trm82 ive heard good things about CFE-223 powder,i cant get it here but would try it ifin I can get some, man your pushing that ttsx light-speed are you sure your loads are safe(with-respect)??? congrat's on owning that m85 in 708. cheers to everyone, jjmp

The cfe223 powder is like rl17 was in my wsm's where you seem to easily gain 150fps over the rest of the powders. I would be interested to see what it would do in a 24" barrel. I had to shoot it through my buddies chrony after mine just to verify it because I could believe it when I first tried the CFE 223.

CFE-I bought an 8 lb jug over a year ago and have not opened it yet. I got it for my FTR .223, instead decided to load H4895 in the .223. ACCURATE!!! I wish there was more published data on the CFE. I shoot Ramshot Big Game & 120 Nosler BT's in my 7-08, love it...

trm82, thanks for the info, yes the new powders are great,

dgd6mm, you jogged my memory about h4895 had a shoot off between it and varget when I was loading my friends 708 Encore pistol 6-7 yrs back varget barley won, try it in your 708s guys. heard nothing but great things about Rshot powders across the board, but haven't tried them all.

regards jjmp

The only thing about cfe-223 is that is a spherical powder and doesnt fill the 08 case very well.

I got good speed with it and it has a soft pressure curve, but i think you will get more consistent accuracy with one of the 4350 powders. Just may have to give up some speed.
