I know what most of you think about the 6.5x284 as a longrange deer cartridge but I am curious about the 140 Berger 'hunting' VLD. Do you think this is a serious mulie bullet? I say mulies, I am refering to large mature bucks. What are your thoughts on this bullet at close range and at the 1800 FPS mark? Good, bad, ugly? IME, there is a BIG difference between average mule deer bucks and mature mule deer bucks as far as size and determination.

What bullet do you recommend for the 6.5x284 for big mulies? Or is this the wrong caliber for LR mature mulies?

Give it to me between the eyes!!

Been hunting Colorado since 2003 for mulies. Watched my friend's wife, his kids, his nieces, cousins, nephews all kill BIG bodied mule deer with 243 bullets at some respectable ranges considered "long" to them (400 yrds).

I specifically had my 6.5x284 built to shoot 140 Hunting VLDs for mulies no matter their weight so long as they are w/i my shooting comfort zone which is going to be in the 800 and under range for the time being.

Hybrid 100V seems to be the "poo" for velocity with 140s according to Hodgdon site.

I will load a photo of a 200 yard shot I took on a doe last summer
So u can see what the damage will be. I don't have my laptop
So it will be a few days.

Wingnut shot a good bull elk at 925 yards with a 140 Berger from his 6.5-284 and it took the life out of him real quick.

    ICANHITHIMMAN,

Which VLD? Do you think it (they) would be as effective at 1800'/sec impact speed?

    Thanks for the pic.

Bergers VLD. I cant speek to the 1800 FPS mark I have never taken game at that muzzle velocity. This was at 2900 fps and we found flesh 20 feet behind the animal. I think it would be good but thats just speculation.

Michael, I run the 140 Berger out of my 6.5 exclusively. MV 2940 the bullet still gives positive expansion at 1100 yds on deer. As you can see from the other posts the short range effects are devastating.

I shoot a 115gr 6mm out of a 6-284 and it is friggin devastating. Ive shot thru many good sized whiteys with it from front shoulder quartering wiping out the rear leg also. And thats with a smaller bullet. The high sd vld sure seem to do some unbelievable stuff. I built the 6mm for coyotes mainly with a 5% usage on deer and now use it all the time since its quiet and easy to get outa the truck compared to a 30" 300 or a 32" 338 that weighs 20+lbs. I would shoot that 6.5 140 at mulies all day long. That 115 6mm has totally surprised me.
