My son has the oportunity to buy a Rem 5R milspec in 300 win, at a very good price. He has read good things about this rifle, but he wants to reduce the weight, for packing, hunting. He is thinking about fluting the barrel, lightening the action, and changing the stock. Would this be fesable, and would he be able to shave a couple of pounds. Does anyone know the current weight and barrel contour, on this barrel. I am thinking about buying it for him, for belated Christmas, then let him pay for the smith work.
