338-375 Ruger Demon

the 3 i have i shoot without muzzle brakes. and they are standard wieght hunting rifles. my 7 is 7 lbs without scope. and yes there are alot of versions of the case from 6mm to 458 i believe there might be more i havent built any new ones since 2009. working on a new one(7mm) known though with a double radius shoulder and a little more freebore will see how it works in a couple of months waiting for my reamer to get done.after talking with rigmaster i decided to go with it and see what happens if it works it should shoot the 145 lrx at 3600plus just a guess. i will start a seperate post when we start working up the build. rick

If the Lapua mag with its giant and ineficient case can be bested bye a case with ten percent less case cap. Lapua mag hot loaded is about 2975 with a 250 gr. bullet the 338/375 Ruger Demon is pushing it to 3130. If I drop to Vihta Vouri N560 or ream the throat out for a longer seat out I could push 3225-3250. Thats impressive. Don't get me Wrong the Lapua mag is impressive. But it was built in the 1980's and the case was not as efficient as modern cases. I wish Lapua would update it. As they are one of the finest in new caliber creations.

I think the velocities have a lot more to do with the pressures you are running and little to do with the cases efficiency. Smaller cases in a given bore will always yield higher efficiency at a given pressure but that does not allow them to overtake the larger case. High Energy N series powders can excell in certain application due to its progressive burn characteristics and that might get you up to 150 FPS at the same peak pressure.

I like the Ruger case design because not because it has any effeciency advantage over exisiting cases but becasue it uses a common .532 magnum rim diameter and fits in most standard length actions while delivering significantly more case capacity that other 3.34 inch long factory rounds. If they offered a factory 7 mm or 338 I think it would be successful. I know if Savage offered a Long Range Hunter in 7mm-375 Ruger that would be a must own rifle for me.

I just happened to stumble onto this post. I've been running a 338/375 Ruger out of an 18" Savage Striker for about 18 months now.

Rigmaster10's numbers seem high, but they are right in line with what I've seen. I'm getting 2650fps with a 250gr Sierra MK and 76.5gr of H 4350 from an 18" barrel. This is with an OAL that will feed from a Savage standard long action magazine. That's a pretty mild load, but I'm getting groups in the .3" range and I get 6-7 firings from a single case.

The next load I hope to try now that I a little more time is the 225 TTSX over RL 17. Since my gun is set up as a mid-range hunting gun (under 500) there's really no reason to run a 300gr MK or something similar. I would rather have superior terminal performance of a true hunting bullet than the superior ballistics of the MK.

The Lapua will win in an apples to apples comparison using heavy bullets. There's just no beating cubic inches when it comes to raw power. The difference is less significant with the lighter bullets though. If you don't need to run the 300gr bullets at 2900fps the Ruger case would work well. Based on what I've seen, I expect the Ruger case to move a 300gr bullet at around 2750-2800 from a 28" barrel. Which still isn't bad if you ask me.

My apologizes to those who responed to my questions:) I didn't get notice of replies in my email.
Photos comparing to wsm,338win, 340 or 338rum to the 338/375. I'm guessing ruger doesn't make a 338RCM so thats the reason for necking down 375Rcm? Or do they and doing it this way achieves more volume for powder? Kinda like 338rum/300rum? As for the velocities and bulging cases w/ excessive powder amts- Is it because you need a bunchs of slow burning to do this get velocity?
I like this idea338/375rcm, as w/ Lapua, Norma they have bolt head size and rediculious brass cost to deal with. Then you have the COAL for repeater in a 110 Savage. I mention Savage because I have a extra action that has been icthing for something cool to do with at some point.
I may have missed it or read over it but what length barrel were you achieving the stated velocities at what elevation.

Thanks for responses guys, sorry I missed them though. I keep a eye out for this thread.

these are built on the 375 ruger case not the ruger compact case. ruger does make a ruger compact in 338 we al started these designs before they come out with the rcm cases. the rcm 338 falls quite a bite short of the 338/375 or the 338 campfire or demon.

Forgot pics - 338 DEMON

can somebody post a pic of the 338 Demon next to a 375 Ruger, Sounds like a winner !
I have a 338 Edge with 30" bbl, the velocity listed for the Demon and 250 gr bullets is similar to what my rifle is getting, I am definately interested !

Here's a picture of the 338-375 Ruger with some other rounds for comparison.

Left to right: 6mm BR 68gr Berger fb, 308 Win 168 HPBT, 300 WSM 185gr Berger VLD, 338-375 Ruger 250gr MK, 375 BME 350gr MK.

The 338-375 will cycle through a Savage long action with the OAL shown. I haven't played with it much from rifle barrels, but I have a 22" and a 24" barrel I'll chronograph sometime this winter. The rifle barrels I have are just lite weight hunting barrels so I just stuffed a 225gr Accubond over 82.5gr of H4831sc and called it good. Zero at 200 and it's 7" low at 300. Never worried about it further than that from the rifles.

I will get you some pictures of both in the next couple days. There several variations of the 338-375 Ruger. The Demon is mine and the only difference is when i had the reamer built i had then push the shoulder forward .015".

Time to test the 300 gr. Bergers in the Demon. Due to compressed load conditions i fear it will not perform very well. But worth a shot anyways. And I miss stated my barrel length in earlier posts. Its a 27"

Any new info on the 338-375 ruger. I have a savage bear hunter on order in 338 win mag and planning on punching out the chamber to 338-375 ruger

Rigmaster 10,

Also would like to hear how the 300 performed in your rifle. Anyone else shooting a 300 Berger OTM from the 338/375 Ruger?

Haven't DoneAnyWork With The 338 Lately. ButIHaveBuilt A 7Mm Version AndImproved The 375. Getting 2700 Fps With A 350 Gr SMK.
