If I stayed with 200grish bullets would the 338-284 be good in a short action? I'm thinking a savage it's mag box is 2.9". I all ready have a good stock for it.

I have never built one but i think you would be alright. I want to build a 20" SA 338-284 for a close range brush gun. Let us know how it turns out once you get it done. Sorry i couldnt be of any help.

I actually have a 19" 338-284 barrel for the Savage. I ran it on both short and long actions and decided that the short action was the best. I run the 185gr TTSX over 55gr of Ramshot TAC powder to get 2760fps from the short barrel.

I never had any trouble with the OAL when using the lighter bullets. Once I got over about 210gr, I felt like I was loosing performance because of the magazine restrictions. I did have trouble getting the case to feed 100% because of the rebated rim. I ended up moving the barrel on to a Striker pistol and using it as a single shot.

Neat caliber though. Good luck with the build!

I am a big fan of the 284 win and have also had several wildcats (6mm, 25, 6.5 ) made from this case. Never tried the 338 or 358 but considered them. Now you don't need to both as the 338 RCM fills that gap perfectly with just a bit more power.

I built a 22" Lilja #2 profile on a SA Ruger M77 tang safety, 7 1/2 lbs with scope. Lengthened mag to 3.1" and use the 225 accubond with 61 gr of RL-17 and fed 210 primer. Vel is 2750. Feeds like a dream. Hornady dies work well. Just a thought......

If you want to seat the bullet out were it belongs, boat tail junction at base of neck 2.9" wont get it. If you dont mind jumping them it will work.

In a 6.5 -284 with a 142 sierral in a S/A rem I had to pull the bolt to get a loaded cartridge out.

142 Sierra = 1.375"

200 grain 338 NAB= 1.340"

Seated where it belongs it will be over 3"

A WSM case will get you another 100 thou room.
