308 Win. ,208gr. Amax ,RL17

I will post some hard info on this next weekend. Picking up my new custom .308 with 28" hart Saturday, shooting it through a chrony same day. Already have a 1# rl17 the a-maxs are coming in Thursday hopefully. Will also test 175mks, 178a-maxs, 168mks and maybe a few others depending on what I find.

So how did the 208s work out for you?
I'm playing around with them in my 18" AR10. A thing about velocity in comparison to the 168s et al: my 208s launched at 2375fps are still supersonic at 1000 yards. The lighter bullets start out ~300fps faster, but lose their oomph faster. The 208s keep their velocity longer.

Very nice timing my friend! My new chrono arrived Friday, and I was out shooting yesterday. Over 24shots fired an average velocity of 2666fps. That's using 48gr RL17, fully prepped win brass, and CCI BR2 Primers.

I also shot my best ever 800 yard F-class score with this load 2weeks ago, a 146-3X. It is fast and accurate.

The more I read about and shoot the 208, the more I like the load combination. I'm thinking that if I adjust the loads for my bolt gun and she like it, the 155/175SMKs are history. For hunting, there are some limitations using this round, like that black bear story. The core separating was interesting, but the bullet sure did a lot of internal damage.

I have had a real hard time finding some 208gr. Amax bullets. I tried my rifle with the 220gr. SGK, RL17, Hornady match brass. The hornady brass was a bit lighter than the winchester brass.

I haven't tested fully, but they're shooting real well from 46 to 47gr. of RL17.

I was using CCI250 primers as well, it's what I have plenty of.

well I will have to even add to this.my 5R even liked the load with 47.5gn of R17 and the 208gn A-max.48gn gave me to flat of a primer so went with the 47.5gn.

shoot the load at 300 a few weeks ago and found that the bullet dropped 11 inches from a 100 yard zero.so went up 15 clicks and it went dead on.haven't ye found out how fast they are flying ( I have no chrony yet)but will say the 168-175gn loads are out for my hunt'n loads.will only use the 168-175gn bullets for papper shooting.

so those who have a 5R can now see what the 208gn A-max will do.even if you do not want to try R17 you can try Varget.I think the same guy is useing 43gn of Varget, but do not hold me to this one.will have to go and look a the forum to make sure.but can add that he is getting really great results with Varget also.but with some loose in FPS I think hes getting 2400 -2500 FPS.

just gotta lve the 208gn A-max out of a 308,John

I'll be trying, WILDCAT RBT 210 gr. with RL17 in factory TIKKA Master Class Sporter. These bullets are surplus to my needs.

Just having the rifle pillar bedded as we speak.
Have been shooting Berger 168's with Varget @ 2800 fps with average accuracy of 1-1/2 too 1-3/4" @ 200 yds. Not good enough for me...and hope to cut that in half after pillar bedding.

I need to eddit my last post. I am shooting 200gr. SGK, not 220gr.

My rifle is really liking the 200gr. SGK, Hornady match brass, CCI250, 47gr. RL17. I have a box of 200gr. SMK I'm going to try next.

My rifle shoots 5 shots of this load into the 0.4s or close to it.

I know this is an old thread, but had to ask a question. What's a good load with the 208's that will fit in an AI magazine? Can it be done and still be a useful load?

Re: 308 Win. with 210gr. Wildcat RBT

Shooting a factory SAKO AII target model with Wildcat 210gr. RBT and RL17

46.9gr. ES 25.96 SD 10.77 avg. 2457 fps 1/4" group @ 100 yds. excellent
47.2gr. ES 36.04 SD 14.96 avg. 2494 fps 1/2" group @ 100 yds. v. gd.

The hinged magazine doesnt allow this bullet seating @ 10 thou to function as a repeater.

Dont know what a 'AI' magazine is. I am loading my 208's at 2.975" which fit in the Wyatt magazine. The only way to get them this length and keep the speed is to run VV N550.

Wind-drift would be reduced only after 600 yd. distances when comparing 168 gr. to 210 gr. bullets, otherwise it's a none issue
