Putting together components for the 300RUM. I've got Fed Premium brass and Fed 215M primers. I'd like to start with the SMK bullet. Any preference in bullet for the 300 RUM?

(The 240's are not available at the moment.)

What do you intend to use this setup for??

If its varmints youre after DO NOT overlook the 178 AMAX. Its alot flatter than its published BC at 300 velocities will lead you to think. Aside from that and if the range is 800 yards or less the 190 SMK has always been a favorite of mine. They can be launched faster than the 210's and 220's. Out to 600-800 yards next to the 178 AMAX theyre tough to beat.

What powder has worked for you with the 190 SMK? - 178 A-Max?

I will be shooting varmints with the RUM as I get familiar with the rifle. In the fall that will all change. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm currently shooting the 240s but wish I would have gone w/either the 210 VLD or 220 smk for the very reason you stated.

I really liked the 200g and 220g smk with H-1000. Gave me .5 moa out of a factory barreled 300 RUM. The 200g smk gave me a couple 4 inch groups at 800 yards, and I used the 220g smk to ring my 1150 yard gong quite a few times. Velocity was 3000fps for the 220g, and 3200fps for the 200g.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the 210g berger vld is also very accurate out of my rifle. Using 89g retumbo, getting 3000fps, 3/4" at 300 yards, and consistently hitting my 1150 yard gong better then any other bullet, including the 220g smk.
