Custom rifle, 300 WSM, 24" 5R barrel...what would be the best twist?

I intend to use this as a "western" gun for larger game, so I would imagine I'm going to use 180-205 grain bullets.

One well regarded gun builder told me 1:10 and another highly regarded gun builder told me 1:11.25.

    Any comments or help appreciated!

    Thank you.

I have one that is 1:10, and that would be my vote.

It stabilizes 210ers with no issues, and I have put 180's through it with good accuracy as well. 1:10 will also work for 230 hybrids (as per the Berger website) so if you wanted to go that route in the future you would be able to.

I DID research this before posting, and was surprised that there were several guys recommending 1:10 and several guys recommending the 1:11....but most posts tending to side with "err on the side of fast" which would mean the 1:10.

Then again, the one that recommended the 1:11 was GAP. So I'm a bit nervous 2nd guessing the recommendation.

You only need a 1:11 to stabilize the bullets you stated. By running the loosest twist possible you get a little faster velocity. So as long as you are sure you wont run heavier than 185-205gn bullets a 1:11 would be ideal.

Me personally, i like the heaviest bullet i can fire out of a weapon and the berger 215 and 230 are just evil as far as 30 cal bullets go. Ive also heard many accounts of people who have tighter than necessary twist getting better expansion from a given bullet so i would go with a 1:10 if it were my gun.

    But thats just my opinion.
