I have a Rem 700 in 300WM, 24" factory barrel. It is older but I bedded it and it shoots great at least to 400 yards( longest range near me. I have been shooting the 168SMK over RL22 and IMR4350. I can't tell any difference on the accuracy or the recoil per say....but I want to buy a big barrel of powder 8lbs or close. The books I have Nosler #5 and Sierra book list the IMR4350 as taking less powder to achieve the same velocity....does this make better sense to use? Is it a faster burning powder? And would I be better off to use the faster powder in my shorter barrel? I also was offered some IMR4831 for very cheap I see this powder is listed for alot of cartridges but have never tried it. This IMR4831 is cheap because it was stored in a clorox bottle and is about 10-15 years old.....I trust the father and son that have both used it to load with but they just will never use it so with as much as I shoot paper and steel I could use that powder if it is still good.

The bullet used for Roosevelt Elk will probably be the 180NAB or the 200NAB. Proably end up limiting my self to 700 yards in prime conditions.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

H4831 is a great powder in 300WM for bullets fro 168 to 200. May not be the fastest but gives me good sd and accuracy in the 300WMs I've loaded for.

R22 and 7828 also work well for the 180s, 190s, and 200s.

Go to Powder Valley and see if you can find some good deals on the powders your looking for.

Good Luck

IMR 4350 or RL 19 for bullets 165 and lighter

H4831 or RL 22 for 180 and heavier

I favor the RL 22 @ 76.0 with 180 Nosler Part. in my 300 Win

RL22 is a very good powder for the 300 Win Mag.
I have loaded the 300 WM with 180gr Nosler PT,75.0 grs RL22 and a Federal GM215M primer for 3 different rifles, getting sub MOA in each and 3000 fps MV.

I love IMR4831. It is my favorite powder in 243Win, 6mmRem, .25-06, and 7mm RM. In my guns, at least, it provides the best velocity/accuracy of any powders I've tried, including H1000 and the ReLoader series.

In my 3 .300 winnys, it seems to work best with the 150 and 165 gr bullets. R-22 edges it out in velocity when you move up to 180 and 200 gr. Accuracy in my guns at least, is on par with R-22 across the board.

That is a load I like 475, However as accurate as it is it isn't very fast. I have the best accuracy with H-1000 (.5-.6 @ 100), I have the most speed with RL-22 but my groups are bigger with 180 gr bullets. I settled on IMR-4831 with a 180 SGK for a hunting load 2950 fps and under 1".

Same experience, but with the Barnes TSX you can´t go wrong.
