Well I have been a troller for quite a while now so I figure I'll contribute something.I put this together for strictly nuking coyotes:)

    I built a .300 WSM on a Savage 12fvss. The barrel is a Pac-nor 30" stainless select, 1-15 twist, fluted, .800 at muzzle.Stockade Coyote Stalker stock.Warne rings and bases, and a Leupy 6.5x20x50LR.

Load development was a pain to say the least I was having problems with high pressures with fairly mild loads until I changed from magnum primers to large rifle, pressures came way down with only a very mild loss in velocity (25 fps).accuracy wise it shoots fantastic .5 to .75 with 3 diffrent bullets and 5 diffrent powders and the largest groups were just over an inch, all testing was done at 100yds.And i will admit I,am nowhere nere a benchrest shooter.

Powders I tried W760, H414,H4350, Viht 550 and Varget. Most accurate was H4350, Highest velocity with 110 v-max was with W760, and highest velocity with Nosler 125BT and 150 BT was Viht 550.

    Final outcome all are magazine length;
    110 V-max, Norma brass, CCI LR200, 75.5grs W760 = 3975fps .75moa
    125BT, Norma brass, CCI LR200, 71.5grs Viht550 =3900fps .5moa
    150BT, Norma brass,CCI LR200,66.0grs Viht550 =3475fps .75moa

These loads are Max in this Rifle if you want to experiment with yours please start 10% under and work up.

Eventually I want to try some 155 Berger vlds but that will have to wait until after hunting season and i'am currently waiting on another barrel from Pac -nor for a 6.5-300 WSM that i am putting together on another 12fvss, Speaking of does anybody have any experience with this round?

Interesting... I've often wondered what my .300 WSM would do with light bullets - but mine has a 1:10 twist and a mere 24" barrel as opposed to your more specialized setup. Glad you got it shooting well for you. Ought to vaporize varmints!

BT, the 300 Varminter was possibly the most talked about cartridge on this site. i've referred to it as "folk lure legend" but not much is really known about it. did Richard Franklin build your gun?

Guy, I also have a 11 twist 24" tikka and I had pretty good luck with minimum testing and 110 vmax's. I was using H380 and Varget and although I had limited testing, I was getting about 3600 fps with a light charge of H380 and .75 MOA groups.

from what I understand that 300 "Varminter" should not be chambered in anything less than a Bat or Nesika action so it can be pushed well past the sane limts of what the 300 WSM was chamberd for.

The 300 "Varminter" is the same spec as the 300 WSM just loaded to stupid pressures and renamed , possible putting unknowing people in danger.

Their was guy here that raved all about this round and how it shoots lazer flat and is instant death to anything within a mile of it. He spent the funds had the gun built and was never seen or heard from agin and a couple weeks later the gun was forsale on another site. I personaly think that it kind of unsafe to call this round one thing and its simple nothing more than an overloaded 300WSM , if it were me I'd have blown the shoulder forward at least .050" so that these over loaded round can't be chambered in guns not built to handel these pressures , so that accidental blow up is avoided.
I don't think that your loads are near the overpressure loads that this round is claimed for , I think that 4200fps with the 110's and 4000 with the 125's

Yes I saw all those discussions thats actually one of the reasons why I put it together just to see if those velocity's were possible. To me "stupid pressures" are exactly that, regardless of what action there on I cant see getting over the velocitys I am at In any action without opening the bolt with a hammer and junking the brass every time you pull the trigger.Call it what you want its still a 300WSM no more, no less. Its a barrel burner for sure but the way I see it if I hit a coyote every 3 shots and I can get 1200 rounds through it, well that will be the best 500 bucks i ever spent:D.

Actually I was looking at the post awhile back about the 375-408 chey-tac,how about a 260gr Nosler BT at 3500fps can you say wolf gun:D

Wildcats little girl had some health problems about the time he finished up the rifle -i think he did offer to sell it to someone onboard here.

Buckturd - i like to knock the everloving crap out of coyotes too ,if i don't get a solid hit -i like to see pieces fly off the edge.
A 260 bt would flatten a big coyote for sure -i want to shoot some of the really big ones.

The 300 Varminter can be built on any action. It is really no different than any of the other highly touted wildcats routinely talked about here with zero safety concerns stated. Only major difference I see is that Franklin does not recommend highly temp sensitive surplus powders, which for some ungodly reason has been accepted as a "safe practice" for newbies to load here only. Franklin stated that with the 700 action he was only running them 3800, he was getting 4000 fps in the custom actions.

Simple word of caution before you go quoting supposed pressure issues on the internet Quickload projections (by individuals that had a vested interest in a certain outcome) that supposedly projected wild pressures. NO ONE here had the chamber and oal specs so at best, they "guessed" or relied on the QL default settings. QL has many internal settings that you can change that will significantly change the outcomes that cannot be seen on the final sheet. We do not know what settings were used or changed. My QL projections with default setttings were different to say the least. I can change seating depth by .100 and drop another bunch. Besides it is all not relevant with that combination as setup because QL is not configured to compute that.

I recently spent about 1-2 hours talking pressures, barrel twists with the Hornady techs at a match. They agreed that the super slow twists such as the 1-17 will radically lower your pressure curves. QL has no provision for taking that into effect and the QL reps say that QL is only built on the industry norms they collected for their data. No one can say that a 300 WSM with a 1-17 twist, zero freebore is anywhere close to the standard data. No that means that we know for a fact that the varminter IS NOT just the standard WSM loaded to stupid pressures. Anyone who says that is making assumptions on things that they do not know.

Based on the multiple reports of guys getting similar/close results in their guns, maybe we had a bunch of wailing and moaning about nothing real or are they totally unsafe or lieing too?

However, with any wildcat or top end cartridge, guns and chambers will vary, Lot to lot powder variations and primer changes require that the reloader proceed with caution and work up loads for their particular gun and not rely on someone elses data, in particular that is at top end!

by the way, www.6mmbr.com just ran another article on that terrible overpressure (not) inaccurate 300 varminter and shooting ground hogs at 1005 yards in their 24 Sep 08 blog and articles.
