What I have noticed is that they tend to come apart in smaller pieces than Berger's do (Berger's tend to chunk up into a bunch of small chunks, whereas the 225 ELD-M seems to almost powderize when they finally are fully expanded). I have also killed many deer, white tails and Axis deer and wild hogs with the 147 ELD-M's from 6.5 creed and 6.5 PRC and they seem to mushroom a little bit better in my experience (They don't powderize like the 225's do when full expansion is reached in an animal). However, to answer your question from a guy who has killed/seen killed 5 elk at ranges from 380 yards to 653 yards: the 225 ELD-M from 300 PRC factory ammo (muzzle velocity around 2,800 fps will work just fine for elk sized game. Just don't expect a complete pass through the far side skin is all. Mine have all penetrated both rib cages just not the far side skin and all that was leftover was mostly lead and copper powder with extremely small chunks against the far side hide.
I’ve killed 4 elk with the 300 PRC factory loads myself and my son killed his elk last year with them; his was a 571 yard shot slightly angled back part of rib cage entry, and it tried to exit in the crease far side but didn’t exit the skin. It broke through ribs on entrance and exit side both. What I have noticed is that they tend to come apart in smaller pieces than Berger’s do (Berger’s tend to chunk up into a bunch of small chunks, whereas the 225 ELD-M seems to almost powderize when they finally are fully expanded). I have also killed many deer, white tails and Axis deer and wild hogs with the 147 ELD-M’s from 6.5 creed and 6.5 PRC and they seem to mushroom a little bit better in my experience (They don’t powderize like the 225’s do when full expansion is reached in an animal). However, to answer your question from a guy who has killed/seen killed 5 elk at ranges from 380 yards to 653 yards: the 225 ELD-M from 300 PRC factory ammo (muzzle velocity around 2,800 fps will work just fine for elk sized game. Just don’t expect a complete pass through the far side skin is all. Mine have all penetrated both rib cages just not the far side skin and all that was leftover was mostly lead and copper powder with extremely small chunks against the far side hide.
