I was driving yesterday and got to wondering if anyone had tried chambering a rifle in this caliber with a long throat to shoot the Berger 168 or 180 VLD. Using a 30" barrel it seems like 2900 to 2950 with the 168 and maybe 2800 fps with the 180 could possibly be achieved. If that was possible it seems like it would be a decent 1000 to 1200 yard gun maybe further. If anyone has been down that road what were the results?

G'day RiverRat,Have lots of experiance with the 284w @ longrange,i think it's an excellent choice.Try a 10 twist ,30 in long ,old winchester western brass(white and red box),don't throat it to long as all the bullets have sharp ogives, about 51gns of h4350 or 54 of h4831sc and the 162 H A/max gives about 2950 to 3000 fps and sub 2 inch 10 shot groups @ 500met no problems..JR..ps call if u want reamer dimensions

Riverrat, the 284win is pretty close in case volume to the 280Rem so performance is similar.

My friend was getting 2900fps out of a 26" barrel, 280 rem and 168gr MK. So the preformance you seek is no problem.

Personally, I am looking at the 280AI or Gibbs versions for a little more powder capacity and getting vel around 3000fps. I just like the improved case look and 3000fps ensures supersonic flight well beyond 1000yds.

Right now I have a 28" barrel blank which I can put on an action to make a very nice LR clay gun.

Thanks for the reply to my posts. I have been gone for 3 days and finally got home to check. I am really interested in building one. I just got done running it on Sierra Infinity and it is impressive for the powder spent. What kind of barrel life are you getting? If I could get 2000 to 2500 accurate barrel life, that would be great. Thanks again for posting replies!
