.280 Ackley and 150grn Swift Scirocco II

In reviving my old thread, I finally got some decent time on the target the last 2 mornings. Temps finally cooperated and this morning when i began it was 54f.

I have still been trying to get the Swift Scirocco II to shoot. I just couldnt get away from that bullet, Mostly cause i liked the tough construction of it and it had a nice BC to go with it.

I picked up a pound of IMR 7828ssc awhile back and that was going to be the powder that i wanted to work with this weekend.

I set up my dies and measured a starting point of .010 off the lands. I loaded 5 rounds and went and shot them for a group over the chrony. Low velocity was 3029 high was 3056. The group, well i bout couldnt hold it together as each shot stacked right in there.

Now the funny part,

After a group like that i had to shoot another! When back down to the reloading room and started to load up another 5 rounds. Then i looked at my calipers laying on the bench. They were closed and weren't reading anywhere close to 0.00.

I closed them up, zeroed them and then measured the round that i had just made. 3.29. These bullets touch the rifling at 3.39. Thats right, This unbelievable load is shooting at .100 off the lands! Went and shot the 2nd group and really beared down. EVEN BETTER! (see attached) This is a 5 Shot group. Not 3!

I wanted to confirm velocities with the shooter app on my phone. I backed up the max distance my range is right now of 450yds. Put a balloon about the size of my fist on the target. punched some numbers for this new load into shooter, I put in 4.5 MOA of elevation, and held for 3 MOA of wind. Balloon disappeared. (attached)

I would have stopped long before i ever got that far off the lands, Some mistakes are worth making i guess...

I went in and had a cup of coffee. Figured this was a good place to stop for the day.

Awesome! Nice shooting! I have some 7828 that is now going to get a look in the 280AI.

I have loaded a work-up with 168 Berger VLD hunters as well - not sure when I will get a chance to set them off but will post results when I do.

Good luck this fall. It is now on public record so if you miss you have no excuses!:D

Can anyone help me with some load data for the combo above? I would really like to use the 150 Swift Scirocco II and be able to push it to 3000fps with accuracy but im having a hard time finding load data for this caliber/bullet combo.

Anyone have quickload that would care to provide some info for me? or personal experience would be great also.

The rifle is a Cooper Excalibur with a 26" tube. Nosler Brass.

I am working with the 150 Swift right now as well, only in a 7mm Rem Mag. I started them .050" off the rifling, on a hunch that is where they will like to be anyhow. Either way, let me know how you make out with them. Here is some QL information for you.

Let me know if there is a certain powder you are looking at. I would think RL22/IMR7828 would be a good place to start..

On edit, I just read the rest of your post! That's excellent shooting. That gives me alot of hope since I am starting .050" off. I know I can back them them down and still be in the money. I just loaded up some powder charge profiles last night, so the first ones will be to find my powder charge and from there, I will tweak seating depth. Very happy with the Swift's, they seem very consistent and their performance on animals is excellent as well.

There performance on game was the driving force behind me wanting to use them.

Way better weight retention than the accubond in my limited experience with them. Hope they work out for you!
